We are seeking a Postdoctoral Research Associate who will support the Chemical and Isotopic Mass Spectromerty Group in the Chemical Sciences Division (CSD), Physical Sciences Directorate (PSD) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL).


The Postdoctoral Research Associate will focus on R&D in analytical chemistry to develop and advance analytical capabilities and methodologies to support the characterization of nuclear materials associated with the nuclear fuels cycle, nuclear non-proliferation and safeguards, nuclear forensics, the National Nuclear Material Archive, and production of isotopes. The research will focus on the development of elemental separations and  front-end sample introduction systems for analytical instrumentation as well as detailed trace level characterizations using a variety of elemental, isotopic, and radiocounting measurement systems.  


Major Duties/Responsibilities: 

  • Develop separation chemistries and front-end introduction systems to remove bulk matrix elements and interfering species for direct measurment by ICPMS or ICPOES
  • Conceive, design, and implement innovative analytical methods chemical analyses using state of the art elemental, isotopic, or radiocounting instrumentation
  • Publish and present research results in professional journals and at scientific conferences
  • Collaborate with other group scientists and technical personnel for the development of new research ideas
  • Ensure compliance with environment, safety, health and quality program requirements
  • Maintain strong commitment to the implementation and perpetuation of ORNL’s research code of conduct


Basic Qualifications:

  • A PhD in Analytical Chemistry, or a related field completed within the last 5 years


Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in separations chemistry over a broad spectrum of elemental groups.
  • Experience with elemental and isotopic measurements using modern mass spectrometry and optical emission spectrometry instrumenation.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Motivated self-starter with the ability to work independently and to participate creatively in collaborative teams across the laboratory 
  • Ability to function well in a fast-paced research environment, set priorities to accomplish multiple tasks within deadlines, and adapt to ever changing needs
