We are seeking a Postdoctoral Research Associate who will support the Data Nanoanalytics Group, Theory and Computation Section in the Center for Nanophase Materials Science Division (CNMS), Physical Sciences Directorate (PSD) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL). The Postdoctoral Research Associate will support the development and application of methods for automated experiment workflows using aberration corrected scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM). The specific focus will be to develop protocols for automated data acquisition and analysis for physics-based discovery of material properties. As a Postdoctoral Research Associate, you will contribute to the development of novel scan control and feedback strategies, inline data acquisition/analysis, and work closely with research staff on experiments and theory to develop and validate predictive models on transformations. You will also collaborate with artificial intelligence/machine learning experts to guide automated STEM experiments.
Major Duties/Responsibilities:
- Contribute to efforts in advanced microscope control, feedback, and automation methods
- Work as part of a dynamic team conducting research that advances and develops cutting-edge characterization capabilities to improve our understanding of nanomaterial transformations from experiments, theory, and simulations
- Present and report research results and publish scientific results in peer-reviewed journals in a timely manner
Basic Qualifications:
- A PhD in Physics, Materials Science, Chemistry, or a related field completed within the last 5 years
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience with microscopy platforms
- Experience with data acquisition and control systems hardware and software such as Python and Labview
- Background in data analysis and simulations using Python
- Ability to work well in a dynamic research environment and set priorities to accomplish multiple tasks within deadlines
- An excellent record of productive and creative research shown by publications in peer-reviewed journals
- Excellent written and oral communication skills
- Motivated self-starter with the ability to work independently and to participate creatively in collaborative teams across the laboratory
- Ability to function well in a fast-paced research environment, set priorities to accomplish multiple tasks within deadlines, and adapt to ever changing needs
