Purpose:

The Biosciences Division of Oak Ridge National Laboratory invites qualified persons to apply for the position of Postdoctoral Research Associate in the areas of chemical and chemoenzymatic synthesis, biochemical methods and characterization, structural biology, and applicable spectroscopies.


Major Duties/Responsibilities:

The position requires collaboration within a multi-disciplinary research environment consisting of the chemistry and biochemistry of plant, fungal, and microbial biology, from the standpoint of small molecule synthesis/characterization and structural biology. The skill set of a qualified applicant will be utilized to conduct basic and applied research in support of the DOE-funded Plant Microbe Interfaces (PMI SFA) project (www.pmi.ornl.gov) and in support of the Laboratory’s missions.  

 

Basic Requirements: 

  • Ph.D. in Chemistry, Biochemistry, or related field relevant to the job duties of this position within the past 5 years.

 

Preferred Requirements:

  • Demonstrated written and oral communication skills.  
  • Effective interpersonal skills. Background in synthetic chemistry and chemoenzymatic chemistry and the purification and spectroscopic methods associated with these fields. Additionally, skills in enzyme mechanisms and structural biology is of value.
  • Participation in and the independent development of synthetic strategies to obtain plant/fungal/microbial metabolites and signaling molecules.
  • Participation in and the independent development of synthetic and chemoenzymatically produced lipid-containing molecules for plant-microbe signaling and structural biology.
  • Knowledge of chemical and enzymatic deuteration methodologies.
  • Delivery of synthetic targets for collaboration in biological and biochemical assays.
  • Dissemination of research through peer-reviewed papers and technical reports, as well as seminar and conference presentations.
  • Active participation in professional organizations and career development action.


Additional Information:
Applicants cannot have received the most recent degree more than five years prior to the date of application and must complete all degree requirements before starting their appointment. 

Appointments will initially be for 24 months with a possibility of an extension of up to 12 months. Initial appointments and extensions are subject to performance and availability of funding.
