We are seeking a Postdoctoral Research Associate who will support the Building Equipment Research Group in the Buildings and Transportation Science Division (BTSD), Energy Science and Technology Directorate (ESTD) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL).   


The work in this group supports the U.S. DOE Building Technology Office, Geothermal Technology Office, and other customers by developing state-of-the-art building equipment for energy efficiency, equipment-to-grid integration, and improved life cycle climate performance.


Major Duties/Responsibilities: 

  • Conducting, coordinating, and reporting research assignments related to thermal systems including:
  • Calorimeter evaluations of compressor technologies, including detailed analysis of the internal processes. This will include technologies such as scroll, rotary, reciprocating and linear compressors.
  • Analysis of working fluids and thermodynamic cycles for vapor compression systems, including residential air conditioners (AC) and heat pumps, commercial AC including rooftop units and chillers, and commercial refrigeration systems for supermarket applications.
  • Heating, ventilation, air conditioning and refrigeration (HVAC&R) system design and performance evaluation.
  • Involvement in developing experimental setups, conducting experimental campaigns, and performing theoretical analyses using modeling and simulation techniques
  • The work will involve interacting and collaborating with researchers from universities, national laboratories, and private industry


Basic Qualifications:

  • A PhD in Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, or a related field completed within the last 5 years
  • Experience in thermodynamics, fluid flow and heat transfer related to vapor compression systems
  • Experience on the modeling and/or testing of compressor technologies such as scroll, rotary, reciprocating, linear and others
  • Experience with the design, instrumentation, and operation of experimental apparatuses for testing of thermal systems
  • Experience in project management with a proven publication record


Preferred Qualifications:

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Motivated self-starter with the ability to work independently and to participate creatively in collaborative teams across the laboratory 
  • Ability to function well in a fast-paced research environment, set priorities to accomplish multiple tasks within deadlines, and adapt to ever changing needs
