Overview:   The Chemical Sciences Division (CSD) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) invites outstanding applications for a postdoctoral research associate to conduct research on crystallization pressures, the associated chemo-mechanical processes and their effects on multiscale porosity. As a postdoc, you will perform a variety of laboratory experiments and utilize neutron and X-ray imaging/scattering techniques to analyze the results. At ORNL you will work with a team of scientists in the CSD to understand the relationship between crystal growth forces, porosity distributions, and materials properties from nanometer to macroscopic scales to improve our capabilities to predict how porosity, permeability and stress/strain/fracture processes evolve in geochemical systems in response to mineral reactions. The position resides in the Geochemistry and Interfacial Sciences Group in the Chemical Sciences Division, Physical Sciences Directorate (PSD) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL).  


Major Duties/Responsibilities

  • Conduct independent experimental research on chemo-mechanical processes, crystallization pressure and the effects on multiscale porosity
  • Collaborate with ORNL researchers on interpreting the results using atomic-scale and reactive transport simulations
  • Present and report research results at international meetings, and publish scientific findings in peer-reviewed journals in a timely manner
  • Ensure compliance with environment, safety, health and quality program requirements
  • Maintain strong commitment to the implementation and perpetuation of values and ethics


Basic Qualifications: 

  • A PhD in Physical Sciences, such as Geology, Geochemistry, Chemistry, Materials Science, Chemical Engineering, or related disciplines completed within the last five years
  • Strong background in experimental work on geochemical (or related) systems such as chemical reactions in porous media


Preferred Qualifications:

  • Expertise in any of the following: neutron, X-ray and light scattering or imaging (particularly (U)SANS, SAXS, INS, QENS, SALS, neutron diffraction and total scattering, tomography, nanotomography and ptychography).
  • A priority will be given to candidates with experience in experimental work in high pressure/temperature aqueous systems, and/or those with experience in understanding fundamental origins of chemo-mechanical processes
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills and the ability to communicate in English to an international scientific audience
  • Excellent record of productive and creative research demonstrated by publications in peer-reviewed journals
  • A self-starter, with the ability to work independently and to participate creatively in a collaborative, team effort


Special Requirements:

Applicants cannot have received their Ph.D. more than five years prior to the date of application and must complete all degree requirements before starting their appointment. The appointment length will be up to 24 months with the potential for extension. Initial appointments and extensions are subject to performance and availability of funding.
