We are seeking a Postdoctoral Research Associate who will support the Systems and Decision Sciences Group in the Computer Science and Mathematics Division (CSMD), Computing and Computational Sciences Directorate (CCSD) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL). The postdoctoral researcher will have expertise in data science, statistics, machine learning, and/or applied math to support a diverse team of data scientists, software engineers and mathematicians. The selected individual will join a team that is developing probabilistic and ensemble machine learning methods for foundational AI models to design innovative ML-driven solutions within the enterprise and cyberphysical domains. This position will work with team members to parse, analyze, visualize, and understand multi-modal data collected from large- and small-scale cyberphysical experiments which the selected individual will help to develop. Learning, designing, and implementing machine learning techniques, mathematical simulations, or other algorithmic solutions to real-world cyberphysical problems are interdisciplinary areas of research involved in this position.  Implementation of data pipelines, experiments to inform efficacy of methods, and rapid learning of background methods is expected. Additionally, the selected individual will have opportunities to participate in multiple on-going cross-disciplinary research projects that use advanced computing architectures and to facilitate technology transfer from the laboratory research environment to industry and academia.


The SDS group is responsible for the design and development of computational solutions for the study of complex engineered and natural systems using scalable architecture-aware algorithms research coupled with innovations in mathematical and statistical methods. The group is part of the Mathematics in Computation (MiC) Section of the Computer Science and Mathematics (CSM) Division. MiC has a strong mentoring culture that provides junior scientists career and research guidance. CSM delivers fundamental and applied research capabilities in a wide range of areas, including applied mathematics and computer science, experimental computing systems, scalable algorithms and systems, artificial intelligence and machine learning, data management, workflow systems, analysis and visualization technologies, programming systems and environments, and system science and engineering. Projects frequently involve collaboration across scientific disciplines, and result in publications, prototypes, and technology transfer to both government and commercial uses.


Major Duties/Responsibilities: 

  • Contribute research to one (or more) of ORNL’s principal areas of research in mathematics and computer science
  • Collaborate with a highly diverse multidisciplinary team
  • Report research results in open literature journals, technical reports, and at relevant conferences


Basic Qualifications:

  • A PhD in computer science, applied mathematics, statistics, or a related field completed within the last 5 years
  • Experience in the design and implementation of data mining and machine learning algorithms
  • Demonstrated written and oral effective communication skills 
  • Effective interpersonal skills


Preferred Qualifications:

  • A strong grasp of numerical linear algebra, probability theory, algorithms, and mathematical analysis
  • Proficiency or ability to become quickly proficient in Python (especially Pandas, NumPy, SciPy), scikit-learn, and visualization libraries; basics of supervised and unsupervised machine learning; Linux/Unix platforms; and Git
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Motivated self-starter with the ability to work independently and to participate creatively in collaborative teams across the laboratory 
  • Ability to function well in a fast-paced research environment, set priorities to accomplish multiple tasks within deadlines, and adapt to ever changing needs
