We are seeking a Postdoctoral Research Associate who will support the Power Exhaust and Particle Control Group (PE&PC) in the Fusion Energy Division (FED), Fusion and Fission Energy and Science Directorate (FFESD) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL). The PE&PC group carries out experimental and simulation work to develop solutions and the accompying physics basis for power exhaust, PMI science, and particle control needs for fusion energy reactors.

 

As part of your role in our PE&PC team, you will interface closely with ORNL staff on collaborations related to the spherical tokamak confinement concept. Working with a number of team members, you will participate in spherical tokamak power exhaust experiments ensuring the successful operation and exploitation of radiated power diagnostics.

 

Major Duties/Responsibilities: 

  • Interface with experts to develop and execute proposals for experimental/simulation studies of radiative plasma exhaust on spherical tokamaks focusing on the UKAEA device, MAST-Upgrade
  • Develop and maintain analysis codes and interact with scientific coordinators to ensure the successful execution of experimental programs
  • Develop novel techniques for interpreting data that combines a number of diagnostic systems to understand the radiation distribution in a spherical tokamak boundary/divertor region
  • Produce high impact publications in key peer-reviewed journals, and conference presentations on fusion divertor physics topics
  • Ensure compliance with environment, safety, health, and quality program requirements
  • Maintain strong commitment to the implementation and perpetuation of values and ethics

 

Basic Qualifications:

  • A PhD in Plasma Physics, Electrial Engineering, Nuclear Engineering, or a related field completed within the last 5 years

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in tokamak boundary experimental science, diagnostics, and/or simulation
  • Working experience with the operation and data analysis of plasma diagnostics, specifically spectroscopic camera systems encompassing spectral ranges that could include UV through to the IR.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Motivated self-starter with the ability to work independently and to participate creatively in collaborative teams across the laboratory 
  • Ability to function well in a fast-paced research environment, set priorities to accomplish multiple tasks within deadlines, and adapt to ever changing needs
