Overview:
Oak Ridge National Laboratory is the largest US Department of Energy science and energy laboratory, conducting basic and applied research to deliver transformative solutions to compelling problems in energy and security.
We are seeking a Postdoctoral Research Associate who will support the Sensors and Embedded Systems Group in the Electrification and Energy Infrastructures Division (EEID), Energy Science and Technology Directorate (ESTD) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL). The chosen candidate will have expertise in process monitoring, diagnosis, and advanced control methods to support automation of complex systems. The ideal candidate has experience in 1) the application of data-intensive methods for fault detection and diagnosis; 2) generating creative solutions for practical challenges in automation; and 3) experimental validation of practical control methods.
The chosen candidate is expected to perform research that expands the state-of-the-art for data- and physics-based models for process supervision in a diverse range of applications, including electrical grid monitoring, additive manufacturing, and water treatment and desalination. The chosen candidate is expected to publish the results of their research. Representative activities include:
- The development and implementation of algorithms and software tools for online identification and updating of dynamic process models (i.e., digital twin technologies)
- Applications of smart manufacturing
- Collaboration with other ORNL researchers to apply developed methods at full scale
Major Duties/Responsibilities:
- The experimental evaluation of data-intensive models and algorithms for complex system supervision and control.
- Present and report research results in high-impact peer reviewed journals, conferences, and program reviews.
- Develop long-term research strategies aligned with monitoring and automation capabilities and opportunities within ORNL.
Basic Qualifications:
- A PhD in Civil Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Environmental Engineering, Physics, or a related field completed within the last 5 years.
- Hands-on experience with data-intensive models, digital twins, modern sensors and data acquisition systems, Internet-of-Things is very valuable.
- This position may also require access to technology and information that is subject to export control.
Funding Source: The position will be funded from projects originating from one or more of the following offices managed by the US Department of Energy: Advanced Manufacturing Office (AMO), Building Technologies Office (BTO), and Office of Electricity (OE).
Applicants cannot have received their Ph.D. more than five years prior to the date of application and must complete all degree requirements before starting their appointment. The appointment length will be for up to 24 months with the potential for extension. Initial appointments and extensions are subject to performance and the availability of funding.
