We are seeking a Postdoctoral Research Associate who will support the Functional Atomic Force Microscopy Group, Nanomaterials Characterization Section in the Center for Nanophase Materials Sciences Division (CNMS), Physical Science Directorate (PSD) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL). The Postdoctoral Research Associate will focus on multimodal chemical imaging with time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometry (ToF-SIMS) and atomic force microscopy (AFM) energy and microelectronic materials.
As part of our research team, you will investigate chemical and functional properties of wide range of energy and microelectronics materials, utilizing ORNL’s capabilities of combined time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometry (ToF-SIMS) and atomic force microscopy (AFM). A particular focus of the research will be to advance and utilize combined AFM/ToF-SIMS platform to understand correlations between electronic response and chemical reactivity in novel microelectronics devices and energy materials. You will closely collaborate with experienced material scientists, and scientists on synthesis, theoretical calculations, and other characterization methods, across multiple divisions at ORNL.
Major Duties/Responsibilities:
- Conduct materials research using ToF-SIMS and AFM
- Advance in situ ToF-SIMS capabilities
- Collaborate with project team members within and outside ORNL
- Responsible for presenting and reporting research results and publishing scientific results in peer-reviewed journals in a timely manner
- Ensure compliance with environment, safety, health, and quality program requirements
- Maintain strong commitment to the implementation and perpetuation of values and ethics
Basic Qualifications:
- A PhD degree in materials science, physics, chemistry, or related field completed within the last 5 years
- Experience in mass spectrometry in material science or related field
Preferred Qualifications:
- Background in ToF-SIMS and AFM
- Experience in python, C++, or Matlab
- Excellent written and oral communication skills
- Motivated self-starter with the ability to work independently and to participate creatively in collaborative teams across the laboratory
- Ability to function well in a fast-paced research environment, set priorities to accomplish multiple tasks within deadlines, and adapt to ever changing needs
