Overview: 

We are seeking a Postdoctoral Research Associate who will support the Nuclear Structures and Construction Group in the Nuclear Energy and Fuel Cycle Division (NEFCD), Fusion and Fission Energy Science Directorate (FFESD) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL). The Postdoctoral Research Associate will focus on developing and applying multiphysics computational models for nuclear materials applications. Such applications include the mesoscale modeling of nuclear fuel microstructural evolution and multiscale modeling of concrete degradation mechanisms.

 

Our group members can work collaboratively with diverse subject matter experts from across the laboratory to solve challenging and important problems related to the development, construction, and operation of fission and fusion energy technologies, carbon-free energy technologies, and ORNL scientific facilities. Members are expected to perform work consistent with Environment, Safety, Security, Health, and Quality (ESH&Q) requirements and business rules. Major Duties/Responsibilities: 

  • Work with a diverse team of scientists to conduct R&D projects and support the expansion of R&D in the field of computational research applied to nuclear materials.
  • Use, develop, contribute to the maintenance of the computational tools used and developed by DOE (MARMOT, Grizzly, MOSAIC, DAKOTA), and assist the development of experiments supporting the numerical research.
  • Plan modeling approaches and perform simulation, verification, validation, and documentation.
  • Present and report research results in peer-reviewed journals, conferences, program reviews, and technical committees.
  • Ability to meet quality assurance standards, through documenting work and developing procedures.
  • Ensure compliance with environment, safety, health, and quality program requirements.
  • Maintain strong commitment to the implementation and perpetuation of values and ethics.

 

Basic Qualifications:

  • A Ph.D. degree in materials science, mechanical engineering, nuclear engineering, or a related field, obtained within the last 5 years.

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in conducting R&D projects and supporting the expansion of R&D in the field of computational materials science.
  • Demonstrated ability to independently solve technical problems with limited supervisory oversight for research and development projects.
  • Experience with DOE advanced modeling and simulation tools and high-performance computing.
  • Knowledge of numerical methods and experience in multiphysics modeling.
  • Experience in image processing and data analysis (ideally using Python).
  • Experience with object-oriented programming (ideally in C++).
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills to support regular interactions with fellow research staff, peer reviewers, research sponsors, and to prepare reports, proposals, publications, and journal articles.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills to support team building, partnering inside and outside ORNL.
