We are seeking a Postdoctoral Research Associate who will support the Quantum Heterostructures Group in the Materials Science and Technology Division (MSTD), Physical Sciences Directorate (PSD) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL).  


As part of our research team, the prospective candidate will work in a highly collaborative environment with a broad range of expertise, including epitaxial film growth, quantum transport,  and photon/electron/neutron-based spectroscopy. The prospective candidate is expected to perform cutting edge research on correlated and topological quantum materials, using angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy and x-ray scattering.


Major Duties/Responsibilities: 

  • ARPES and x-ray studies of correlated topological quantum materials.
  • Work with others to maintain a high level of scientific productivity
  • Publish scientific papers in key journals and present at key meetings
  • Ensure compliance with environment, safety, health, and quality program requirements
  • Maintain strong commitment to the implementation and perpetuation of values and ethics


Basic Qualifications:

  • A Ph.D degree in Condesed Matter Physics, or closely related field completed within the last 5 years
  • Previous research experience in scattering and spectroscopic techniques, such as ARPES, EELS, inelastic x-ray/neutron scattering


Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience and track record in correlated and topological materials
  • Extensive experience in preparing user proposals is a plus
  • Proficiency with scripting or programming languages, such as Python and Igor.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Motivated self-starter with the ability to work independently and to participate creatively in collaborative teams across the laboratory 
  • Ability to function well in a fast-paced research environment, set priorities to accomplish multiple tasks within deadlines, and adapt to ever changing needs


Applicants cannot have received their Ph.D. more than five years prior to the date of application and must complete all degree requirements before starting their appointment. The appointment length will be for up to 24 months with the potential for extension. Initial appointments and extensions are subject to performance and the availability of funding.
