Overview: 

Oak Ridge National Laboratory is the largest US Department of Energy science and energy laboratory, conducting basic and applied research to deliver transformative solutions to compelling problems in energy and security.

 

We are seeking a Postdoctoral Research Associate to perform cutting-edge research in structural biology of enzymes degrading recalcitrant natural and synthetic polymers.

 

The position resides in the Neutron Diffraction Section of the Neutron Scattering Division (NSD) and is a collaborative project with the Biodesign & Systems Biology Section in the Biosciences Division (BSD). The post-doc will be mentored by Dr. Flora Meilleur (NSD) and will work closely with Dr. Josh Michener’s team (BSD) on this collaborative project.  

 

Your work in this position will directly benefit from the X-ray and neutron scattering capabilities of the Spallation Neutron Source (SNS) and the High-Flux Isotope Reactor (HFIR) and the electron microscopy capabilities at the Center for Nanophase Material Science (CNMS).

Major Duties/Responsibilities: 

  • Express, purify, and crystallize targeted enzymes
  • Perform biochemical characterization and mutagenesis studies
  • Determine protein structures using X-ray and neutron diffraction, cryo-electron microscopy, and microcrystal electron diffraction
  • Assist in the development and preparation of proposals
  • Publish research results in scientific journals
  • Participate in an inclusive work environment for a diverse community of users, staff, postdocs, and students

Basic Qualifications:

  • PhD in biochemistry, structural biology, chemistry, or a related field within the last 5 years
  • Strong interpersonal, communication, and presentation skills
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate research results in peer-reviewed publications
  • This position requires that you successfully complete required training, including radiological training

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • A strong background in heterologous protein expression, purification, and biochemical characterization
  • Experience in molecular biology
  • Knowledge of protein structure determination methods is desirable
  • Motivated self-starter with the ability to work independently and to participate creatively in collaborative teams across the laboratory 
  • Ability to work within a multi-disciplinary team environment on scientifically challenging problems
  • Ability to function well in a fast-paced research environment, set priorities to accomplish multiple tasks within deadlines, and adapt to changing needs.
