Overview: 

Oak Ridge National Laboratory is the largest US Department of Energy science and energy laboratory, conducting basic and applied research to deliver transformative solutions to compelling problems in energy and security.

 

The Physics Division in the Physical Sciences Directorate at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) is seeking candidates for a postdoctoral position in radiation detection R&D. The division seeks to develop a 3D printing capability to advance radiation detection for applied nuclear science. The project will be carried out in a multidisciplinary environment in which the postdoctoral associate will collaborate with the Robotics and Intelligent Systems group in the Manufacturing Sciences Division and with institutions outside ORNL. 

 

Major Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Develop robotic systems for the fabrication of radiation detectors and plan and execute the research and development necessary for the practical implementation of those solutions.
  • Participate in new and ongoing research at the intersection of radiation detection and additive manufacturing
  • Interpret, report, and present research concepts and results to national and international audiences at all levels.
  • Write peer-reviewed papers and technical reports for internal and external release and must represent the organization by giving technical presentations in large public forums.

 

Basic Qualifications:

  • A Ph.D. in nuclear or mechanical engineering, physics, or a related field within the past five years

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience designing and building 3D printing and/or robotics systems
  • Experimental hands-on experience with at least one of the following: 3D printing, robotics, radiation detection, scintillator development
