Overview:

We are seeking a Postdoctoral Research Associate who will support the Carbon and Composites Group in the Chemical Science Division (CSD), Physical Science Directorate (PSD) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL). In this role, you will focus on the design of multi-phase polymers of interest to manufacturing science. The research effort requires a strong background in polymer chemistry, synthesis and functionalization of polymers and characterization.

 

Major Duties/Responsibilities: 

  • Conduct block copolymer synthesis, chemical modification of polymers
  • Conduct chemical characterization (e.g., spectroscopy, thermal analysis, morphological characterization by scattering and microscopy tools, and data analysis).
  • Work with others to maintain a high level of scientific productivity
  • Publish papers in key journals after intellectual property has been protected
  • Ensure compliance with environment, safety, health, and quality program requirements
  • Maintain strong commitment to the implementation and perpetuation of values and ethics
  • In addition to these research responsibilities, the job holder will interact regularly with senior scientists, program managers, group members, and industrial partners, and prepare and present periodic reports documenting research and development

 

Basic Qualifications:

  • A PhD in chemistry or chemical engineering or a related field completed within the last 5 years

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Training and/or experience in precision co-polymer synthesis, post-polymerization functionalization and polymer processing-structure-property relationships is desirable
  • Possess a good understanding of polymer chemistry and  self-assembly
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Motivated self-starter with the ability to work independently and to participate creatively in collaborative teams across the laboratory 
  • Ability to function well in a fast-paced research environment, set priorities to accomplish multiple tasks within deadlines, and adapt to ever changing needs
