Overview:

We are seeking a Postdoctoral Research Associate who will support the Technology and Integration Group in the National Center for Computational Sciences Division (NCCSD), Computing and Computational Sciences Directorate (CCSD) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL). The Postdoctoral Research Associate will work in Operating Systems and Runtimes (OS/Rs) for large-scale HPC systems. The candidate will be able to contribute to one or more of the following areas: Operating System/Runtime architectures, confidential computing, and cybersecurity. We are a leader in computational and computer science, with signature strengths in high-performance computing and data analytics with applications in a large variety of science domains. NCCS is home to some of the fastest supercomputers and storage systems in the world. This position is in the Technology Integration Group as a part of Advanced Technologies Section within NCCS.   • Exploring Confidential Computing technologies in the context of large scale HPC system software environments
  • Developing novel Operating System / Runtime (OS/R) mechanisms to support secure system compartmentalization

 

Major Duties/Responsibilities: 

  • Collaborate with internal and external researchers on a wide variety of system software research and projects.
  • Integrate and deploy system software environments integrating confidential computing capabilities (e.g., ARM TrustZone, Intel TDX, AMD SEV)
  • Architect and implement secure partitioning extensions in specialized OS/R environments
  • Investigate security capabilities of new hardware architectures (e.g., Nvidia DPUs)
  • Deliver toolkits and new capabilities that execute on ORNL’s leading HPC infrastructures
  • Collaborate in authoring peer reviewed papers, technical papers, reports.
  • Seek membership in professional, academic, and research organizations.

 

Basic Qualifications:

  • A PhD in computer science/engineering, mathematics, statistics, domain science area, system software, HPC, and operating systems, or a related field completed within the last 5 years.
  • A strong publication and research track record in system software, HPC, and operating systems.

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • The ability to work independently and develop and deploy custom OS/Rs
  • Experience in high-performance computing and system software development
  • Ability to collaborate with scientists, engineers, and sponsors
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Motivated self-starter with the ability to work independently and to participate creatively in collaborative teams across the laboratory 
  • Ability to function well in a fast-paced research environment, set priorities to accomplish multiple tasks within deadlines, and adapt to ever changing needs
