Location: Oak Ridge, TN, US, 37830

Company: Oak Ridge National Laboratory

Requisition Id 6978

Overview:

Oak Ridge National Laboratory is the largest US Department of Energy science and energy laboratory, conducting basic and applied research to deliver transformative solutions to compelling problems in energy and security.

We are seeking a Postdoctoral Research Associate who will support the Correlated Electron Materials Group in the Materials Science and Technology Division (MSTD), Physical Sciences Directorate (PSD) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) and is supported by the Department of Energy, Quantum Science Center, a National Quantum Information Science Research Center.

The Postdoctoral Research Associate will help advance our understanding of topological quantum materials through materials synthesis, thermodynamic and transport property measurements, and structural characterization.  The core scientific aim of the work is  to realize bulk materials that may host Majorana zero modes, specifically among candidate topological superconductors and quantum spin liquids. As a postdoc, you will have the opportunity to collaborate with researchers from diverse backgrounds, including condensed matter theorists and scientists performing spin-angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy, scanning tunneling microscopy, and neutron diffraction and scattering.

Postdoctoral research associates appointed to the Quantum Science Center will engage with a network of universities, national laboratories, and industry to overcome key roadblocks in quantum state resilience, controllability, and ultimately the scalability of quantum technologies to realize the quantum future.

Major Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Support efforts to develop and understand topological electronic and magnetic materials
  • Drive the research forward by identifying promising material systems, performing detailed experimental investigations, tuning them toward desired behaviors
  • Present and report research results and publish scientific results in peer-reviewed journals in a timely fashion
  • Keep an orderly and informative laboratory workspace and notebook
  • Help maintain laboratory instruments
  • Ensure compliance with environment, safety, health, and quality program requirements
  • Maintain a strong dedication to the implementation and perpetuation of values and ethics

Basic Qualifications:

  • A PhD in Physics, Applied Physics, Material Science, Chemistry or a related field completed within the last 5 years
  • Background in experimental materials physics research on topological superconductors, quantum spin liquids, or other topological materials

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Familiarity with the health and safety hazards associated with an experimental condensed matter laboratory that houses an extensive synthesis effort
  • Experience with materials synthesis and/or crystal growth
  • Skilled in x-ray diffraction data collection and analysis
  • Experience with measurement and analysis of magnetic  properties and electrical and thermal transport properties
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Motivated self-starter with the ability to work independently and to participate creatively in collaborative teams across the laboratory
  • Ability to function well in a fast-paced research environment, set priorities to accomplish multiple tasks within deadlines, and adapt to ever changing needs
