Overview:

We are seeking a Postdoctoral Research Associate who will support the Electric Drives Research Group in the Buildings and Transportation Science Division (BTSD), Energy Science and Technology Directorate (ESTD) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) to conduct research on high frequency power electronic systems including wireless power transfer systems for EV charging.

 

The successful candidate will be proficient in analysis, design, and simulation of high frequency power electronics systems needed in electric vehicle applications. The candidate will also assist in fabrication and evaluation of power electronics systems as well as contributing to the development of innovative power electronics designs for inverters and converters for various applications.

 

Major Duties/Responsibilities: 

  • Conduct R&D projects and help the expansion of R&D to take advantage of our multidisciplinary capabilities, multimodal strengths, and unique tools and capabilities
  • Be knowledgeable in the fundamental concepts and principles of power electronics including PWM dc-dc converters, high frequency resonant power convertors, high frequency magnetics, small-signal modeling, and control analysis of switched mode power converters
  • Be familiar with the state of the art in power electronics technology, packaging of wide bandgap devices, and high frequency passive components.  Be well versed in various modeling and simulation tools
  • Network and develop collaborative R&D with other groups and divisions internally and with DOE, the industry, and the utilities
  • Contribute towards new proposals to internal and external funding agencies

 

Basic Qualifications:

  • A PhD in Electrical Engineering with a focus on Power Electronics or a related field completed within the last 5 years

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with high frequency power electronics applications for electric vehicle application
  • Knowledge of circuit simulation and mathematical tools such as PLECS, MATLAB, Saber
  • A publication track record in reputed peer reviewed publications
  • Prior work experience with the industry
  • A strong commitment to scientific integrity and safety
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Motivated self-starter with the ability to work independently and to participate creatively in collaborative teams across the laboratory 
  • Ability to function well in a fast-paced research environment, set priorities to accomplish multiple tasks within deadlines, and adapt to ever changing needs
