Postdoctoral Research Associate - metal Big Area Additive Manufacturing (mBAAM)

Date: Mar 11, 2023

Location: Oak Ridge, TN, US, 37830

Company: Oak Ridge National Laboratory

Requisition Id 8852

Overview:

Oak Ridge National Laboratory is the largest US Department of Energy science and energy laboratory, conducting basic and applied research to deliver transformative solutions to compelling problems in energy and security.

We are seeking a Postdoctoral Research Associate who will support on-going project tasks for characterization and property evaluation in the field of advanced manufacturing processes in the Alloy Behavior and Design Group, Materials Structures and Processing Section in the Materials Science and Technology Division (MSTD), Physical Sciences Directorate (PSD) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL).

The candidate is expected to join a research team investigating microstructure-property-process relationship in metal-base structural materials or components made through cutting-edge technologies, including metal Big Area Additive Manufacturing (mBAAM), and driving next generation large-scale additive manufacturing technology development. Major technical activities include a database creation of microstructure and mechanical property of the printed products through the wire-base additive manufacturing technology with commercially available metal-base wires, which will be the basis to establish the methodology of new alloy-and-process development for large-scale additive manufacturing technology.

The candidate will have interest and experience in one or more topics listed below.

  1. Deformation mechanisms of metal-base structural materials at ambient/elevated temperatures
  2. Property evaluation in tensile, toughness, fatigue, creep, or creep-fatigue of metal-base structural materials
  3. Phase equilibrium, solidification, and microstructure evolution of multi-phase containing structural materials
  4. Detailed microstructure characterization of cast/wrought/additively manufactured materials
  5. Evaluation and characterization of materials consisting of heterogeneous microstructure
  6. Interactive approach of experiments and modeling in predicting material behaviors

Major Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Perform experimental work including material property evaluation correlating with manufacturing process parameter and microstructure evolution for a fundamental description in materials made through advanced manufacturing process
  • Work with a diverse team of experts in modeling, processing, property measurement, alloy design, environmental compatibility, and other relevant areas to advance science-based understanding of additively manufactured materials
  • Produce high impact publications and conference presentations in the field of additive manufacturing
  • Maintain a strong commitment to the implementation and perpetuation of values and ethics

Basic Qualifications:

  • A PhD in material science, chemistry, physics, etc., or a related field completed within the last 5 years
  • Experience in metal-base structural materials related research with experimental, theoretical, and characterization components

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in research or education of physical metallurgy, including microstructure evolution and property response in ferrous alloys
  • Experience in microstructural characterization of metal-base materials with scanning- and/or transmission electron microscopes
  • A background in material deformation mechanisms and evaluation methodology of mechanical property evaluation
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Motivated self-starter with the ability to work independently and to participate creatively in collaborative teams across the laboratory
  • Ability to function well in a fast-paced research environment, set priorities to accomplish multiple tasks within deadlines, and adapt to ever changing needs
