Description of job: The Fusion and Materials for Nuclear Systems Division (FMNSD) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) invites applicants for a Mechanical Engineer in the Remote Systems Group. Remote Systems specializes in the development of advanced remote processes, handling systems and robotics for inaccessible environments in nuclear fission, fusion energy and particle accelerator applications. We seek individuals with advanced technical and analytical skills who are comfortable working across disciplines to contribute and lead in a fast-paced, team-oriented environment. Successful candidates will have a clear record of achievement in R&D, analytical skills, and a commitment to fostering growth in team members.

 

Job Duties and Responsibilities: The successful candidate will perform research in the area of robotics for remote and hazardous environments.  Research focuses on innovative solutions to challenging problems in inaccessible locations.  Job duties include:

  • Analyze complex systems involving temperature, stress, radiation, magnetic fields, etc., to develop unique solutions to integrated problems that may push the limits of existing analysis techniques.
  • Lead research proposals in response to solicitations, identifying where innovative application of remote systems technology can make an impact.
  • Communicate results of experiments and analyses through presentations, reports, conference papers, and peer-reviewed journals.
  • Prepare work proposals, cost and schedule estimates, and project management as required for delivery of custom solutions.
  • Oversee fabrication and testing of developmental systems.
  • Accountable for compliance with environment, safety, health, and quality.

 

Ideal candidate qualifications:

  • Experience in the design of unique, remotely operated equipment for hazardous environments
  • Ability to write proposals and conduct independent research
  • Ability to assemble and lead teams to respond to solicitations
  • Ability to lead a project/program independently
  • Management of personnel (technicians/engineers/craft) to effectively execute a project
  • Ability to effectively complete project and design reviews by sponsors and program managers
  • Manage budget and schedule, and track project progress
  • Create engineering solid models and fabrication drawings using SolidWorks and Creo
  • Review and assist in the production of design requirements documents

 

 

Qualifications Required

  • Successful candidate must have a Doctorate degree in Mechanical Engineering or related field with demonstrated knowledge and skills needed to succeed in the development and application of engineering methods to solve one of a kind, real-world problems
  • Prior experience working in the nuclear field, particularly in the design and development of systems for inaccessible remote environments, is desirable  
  • Excellent communication skills as evidenced by previous reports and presentations is required
  •  The ability to work individually or as part of a team, and lead based on knowledge and experience, are essential
