The Imaging, Signals, and Machine Learning (ISML) group at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) conducts applied computer vision research and development addressing critical issues of industrial and economic competitiveness, energy efficiency, biomedical measurement science, and security. The group consists of staff members with backgrounds in electrical engineering, computer science, and optical engineering, and frequently collaborates with partners in industry, academia, and other government organizations.


To support ORNL strategic R&D activities in advanced manufacturing, the ISML group is accepting applications for a research staff member position with expertise in computer vision, image processing, and computational imaging. The selected candidate will work at the Manufacturing Demonstration Facility (MDF - to advance manufacturing technologies, and to facilitate and accelerate their deployment to industry.

Working with state-of-the-art 3D printers and machining systems, we are manufacturing complex parts with a wide range of materials and sizes, and under different thermal conditions. Because flaws or suboptimal conditions are common, we are interested in automatically identifying and quantifying geometrical and surface features, characterizing material properties, and monitoring physical and thermal conditions during the manufactured process.


In this context, your work will focus on developing hardware and software computer vision techniques (1) to monitor the manufacturing process in-situ; (2) to assess the quality of the manufactured parts, either in-line or off-line; and (3) to develop modules of a feedback loop control strategy. You will rely on the combination of spectral imaging, 3D imaging, modeling and simulation, and/or optical designs in order to extract relevant information from the scene.  You will then develop algorithms to extract quantifiable features, eventually converting the algorithm into a trained AI model for in-situ quality control.


Job Duties and Responsibilities:

Development of advanced analytics solutions for detection and measurement systems

Development of software and algorithms to collect and analyze data

Development of imaging/sensing systems to collect data

General support of research needs within the Imaging, Signals, and Machine Learning spaces

Development of ideas and proposals


Required Qualifications

- Ph.D. in electrical engineering, computer engineering, computer science, or closely related field

- 2+ years of work experience in related technical space

- Experience in designing and building complex imaging systems

- Demonstrated experience conceiving and executing research and development projects

- Substantial programming skills using tools such as C/C++ and/or Python

- Substantial experience in the implementation of image processing algorithms

- This position requires access to technology that is subject to export control requirements. Successful candidates must be qualified for such access without an export control license, which requires U.S. Citizenship or LPR (Lawful Permanent Residence.)
