Apply now »

Date: Nov 3, 2020

Location: Oak Ridge, TN, US, 37830

Company: Oak Ridge National Laboratory

Requisition Id 4202

Purpose

Oak Ridge National Laboratory is hiring for a research and development staff scientist position, with expertise in the integrated measurement and modeling of coastal terrestrial-aquatic interfaces. We seek candidates with expertise and experience in observational and experimental work in coastal systems, balanced with a strong record of developing evaluating, and applying mechanistic models of the hydrological, biogeochemical, and vegetation components of coastal systems. The position will have a significant early focus on coastal systems in the Mid-Atlantic and Great Lakes regions, but candidates with research experience in other saltwater or freshwater coastal systems are also encouraged to apply. The long-term focus for the position will be on contributions to new mechanistic representation of coastal terrestrial-aquatic interfaces within Earth system models. This position will also contribute to development of a multi-scale modeling and observational framework operating at sites, transects, watersheds, and eventually large regions.

This research staff position provides an excellent opportunity for the candidate to work with a multi-institutional and world-class team of experimentalists and modelers. There will be immediate opportunity for engagement in one or more large-scale and multi-year research projects.

Qualifications

You will have the following qualifications: hold a PhD in a field related to mechanistic understanding of coastal terrestrial-aquatic interface systems; have two or more years of postdoctoral research experience (or equivalent);  have a working knowledge of field and laboratory methods relevant to hydrological, biogeochemical, and/or ecological process studies in coastal systems; have a working knowledge of one or more mechanistic numerical models with relevance to these systems; have demonstrated excellent oral and written communication skills through published papers and scientific presentations; have demonstrated ability to work effectively in a highly collaborative team environment.

Additional desirable qualifications include: field and/or laboratory experience in Mid-Atlantic or Great Lakes coastal systems; experience with one or more Earth system modeling frameworks; experience with one or more biogeochemical reaction modeling frameworks.
