The Bethel Valley Radiochemical Processing (BVRP) Group within the Radioisotope Science and Technology Division (RSTD), Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) is seeking applicants for a Radioisotope Production Technical Professional to support isotope production operations.  


The BVRP Group within the RSTD, ORNL has an immediate opening for a Radioisotope Production Technical Professional.  We are seeking a highly motivated, highly organized, and talented candidate to join our growing team to work on our expanding isotope production portfolio.  Utilizing the unique capabilities at ORNL, including the High Flux Isotope Reactor (HFIR) and related radiochemical and nuclear processing facilities, the BVRP supports a variety of projects supplying difficult to produce radioisotopes essential for medical, research, and industrial applications.  Production of these radioisotopes support the missions of the Department of Energy (DOE) and other government agencies, as well as the needs of private organizations and institutions.  Our current focus is on production and processing research and development to stand up new production capabilities for medical and industrial radioisotopes, including Sr-89, Ba-133, Lu-177, W-188, Ac-225, Ac-227 and Th-229.


Major Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Lead and support isotope production activities in a team environment in radiological and nuclear facilities; including hot cell and glovebox production operations
  • Develop and coordinate production and processing schedules and liaise with radioisotope program staff in support of customer requests
  • Develop solutions to radioisotope processing and production challenges
  • Engage with scientists, engineers, and technicians to establish solutions to complex problems
  • Assist and develop quality control and quality assurance documentation as well as procedures in support of isotope production and operational excellence
  • Ensure compliance with environmental, safety, health, and quality program requirement
  • Assist with the coordination of the radioactive and hazardous waste disposal
  • Mentor and train technicians

Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in physical or engineering sciences and 2 or more years of relevant experience
  • An equivalent combination of training, education, and experience may be considered instead of a BS degree
  • Experience in isotope production activities and chemical purification techniques. 
  • Excellent communication skills are essential to enable effective interaction with peers, technical and non-technical staff.


Preferred Qualifications:

  • Advanced degree in Chemistry or related field and 2 or more years of relevant experience.
  • Demonstrated ability and hands-on experience with safe handling of highly radioactive samples and experience with glove box and/or remote hot cell operations 
  • Experience in wet-chemistry operations and nuclear detection methods; including gamma-ray spectroscopy 
  • Experience in establishing quality assurance and quality control documentation
