Overview:
The Environmental, Safety, Health & Quality Directorate at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) invites applications for Radiological Engineer positions within the Nuclear and Radiological Protection Division (NRPD).
ORNL is the largest U.S. Department of Energy science and energy laboratory, conducting basic and applied research to deliver transformative solutions to compelling problems in energy and security. ORNL operates five non-reactor nuclear facilities and dozens of radiological facilities that perform nuclear research and isotope production activities to support the advancement of nuclear power applications, renewable energy, basic scientific research, and isotope production for medical and industrial applications. ORNL also operates the Spallation Neutron Source (SNS), a one-of-a-kind research facility that provides the most intense pulsed neutron beams in the world for scientific research and industrial development.
The NRPD is seeking entry level Radiological Engineers to provide technical leadership and field support to ORNL research and facility operations staff as well as the NRPD Radiological Protection Operations (RPO) team.
Major Duties/Responsibilities:

Participate in radiological work planning and development, and implementation of radiological hazard controls, research, and experimental safety summaries, RWPs, and radiological design reviews.

Develop technical basis documents, technical evaluations, operational radiological protection procedures, and ALARA Reviews.

Perform shielding calculations to support shielding design for a wide range of gamma, x-ray, and neutron intensities and energy spectra.

Periodically perform airflow studies in facilities to ensure optimal placement of Continuous Air Monitoring equipment.

Support planning and design of nuclear and radiological facility modifications as required and perform calculations in support of engineering control cost/benefit decisions.

Review, evaluate, and approve Radiological Work Permits and determine applicable radiobioassay requirements commensurate with the radiological intake hazards

Serve on the ORNL Emergency Operations Center support team.

Work with NRPD and applicable line management to monitor radiological performance, evaluate data, and develop performance indicators in support of the ORNL Contractor Assurance Program

Participate in assessments, critiques, incident investigations, and related reviews at ORNL or other Battelle-affiliated Laboratories.

Participate in stack monitoring design, calculations, and alert levels.

Assist with responsibilities assigned to the SNS RSO in the Safety Analysis Document (SAD) and Accelerator Safety Envelope (ASE) – primarily concerned with shielding configuration and radiation doses

Assist in the approval, documentation and confirmation that all SNS configuration-controlled shielding is in an approved configuration after shutdown and any changes.

Assist in the management of RS-Holds at SNS to secure configuration-controlled shielding and ensure radiation safety for maintenance duties.

Abide by the principles of Safe Conduct of Research including being personally responsible for ensuring safe operations by raising safety concerns, using a questioning attitude, considering hazards for every task, and never stop learning procedure compliance.

Basic Qualifications:

BS degree in a science, health physics, engineering, or related technical field

Work will involve various physical requirements and certain working conditions and as such a post offer, pre-hire physical will be required.
Preferred Qualifications:
-
MS degree with a Health Physics emphasis, Nuclear Engineering, or related technical field.

Zero to two years of relevant experience
-
Excellent computer skills, including experience performing complex radiological protection calculations using MCNP, MicroShield, or other relevant applications.

Past or current service in an internship position supporting the NRPD at ORNL
-
Experience within the DOE Complex and practical experience implementing a Radiation Protection Program in accordance with 10 CFR 835.

Demonstrated technical abilities, and excellence in verbal and written communication are required. Must have good interpersonal skills and be able to work effectively as part of a team.

Working knowledge of radiation detection instrumentation and principles for monitoring airborne radioactivity is required. Radiological analytical laboratory experience is a plus.

On track toward acquiring Certification by the American Board of Health Physics.

Experience working in a research and development environment (i.e., DOE National Laboratory) with high-energy particle accelerators, transuranic, and non-typical isotopes is preferred.
