Overview:

Purpose:

The Integrated Building Performance and Analysis (IBDA) group leads the development of innovative methods for residential and commercial whole-building energy performance and systems integration, deployment, and analysis in support of the DOE mission. Staff members lead and participate on teams focused on research, development, and deployment (RD&D) of low-carbon, energy-efficient, demand-flexible, and resilient buildings for the DOE Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy (EERE) Building Technologies Office (BTO), the Federal Energy Management Program (FEMP), the Weatherization and Intergovernmental Program (WIP) Office, and State and Community Programs. IBDA is currently seeking a Research Associate Staff to support its research goals.

 

Main Responsibilities / Duties:

  • Utilize science-based skillset to perform embodied carbon life-cycle assessments for select materials and technologies.
  • Collect, analyze, and report metrics on carbon and energy savings resulting from building technologies research projects.
  • Lead project management and milestone reporting for large projects with interdisciplinary research teams.
  • Conduct technical research and market studies on select building technologies topics to meet program objectives.
  • Develop and present results of R&D activities through progress reports and publish scientific findings in peer-reviewed journals and conference papers.
  • Collaborate with research staff to write research proposals to funding agencies.
  • Collaborate with research staff and industry partner organizations to develop Cooperative Research and Development Agreements (CRADAs) and user facility agreements to engage in joint research activities.
  • Lead teams to develop and hold workshops with internal and external stakeholders on low carbon and energy saving research topics for buildings.
  • Participate in technical societies related to research activities.

Basic Qualifications:

  • PhD degree in engineering, science, business, economics, or related discipline
  • At least 5 years of technical experience is required.
  • The individual must have experience conducting project management and reporting, strong attention to detail, and the ability to prioritize and meet deadlines.
  • Candidate must be proficient with Microsoft Office suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook).
  • The qualified applicant must also possess an advanced understanding of building energy performance and building energy savings, specifically research related to thermal performance, durability, and resiliency of building envelope components.
  • The individual must possess a strong commitment to ethical and professional values as well as maintain a compliance with environmental, safety, health, and quality standards.

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • The applicant should have the ability to work creatively and cooperatively as a member of an interdisciplinary research team and demonstrate strong interpersonal and communication skills to support team building, partnering, and leadership.
  • Candidate should be highly organized, self-motivated and possess strong interpersonal skills (both oral and written) to support regular interactions with Laboratory staff, sponsors, industry, and academia.
  • Excellent communication skills for presentation of methodology, results, and demonstrations.
  • Experience with assessing customer or sponsor needs and developing plans to address expectations.
