Location: Oak Ridge, TN, US, 37831

Company: Oak Ridge National Laboratory

Requisition Id 1047

Pay Band:  Research Professional 2, Exempt
Relocation:  Domestic and International relocation assistance is available for this position.

The mission of the neutron optics and polarization team is to develop devices, techniques and methods enabling new capabilities, provide operational support for these new capabilities, to improve the performance of existing neutron scattering instruments, and to participate in the design and commissioning of new instruments at SNS and HFIR.  Our team specializes in devices and techniques for manipulating the neutron beams used by the neutron scattering instruments at the SNS and HFIR.  Our research and development interests fall into three topical areas: controlling the phase space configuration of the neutron beam, developing new neutron polarization techniques, and Larmor labeling methods.

In this role you will serve as the lead technical contact on projects and proposals using and developing polarized neutron techniques and devices.  You will have the opportunity to work closely with members of Instrument Methods, Projects and Technologies Group and other members of the Neutron Sciences Directorate.  This position reports to the neutron optics and polarization team lead.

Major Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Promote the scientific mission of the Neutron Sciences Directorate by developing new neutron scattering capabilities.
  • Develop new neutron scattering techniques and instrumentation.
  • Develop new Larmor methods to improve resolution and extend the time and length scales neutrons can probe.
  • Conduct scientific research in neutron optics systems.
  • Serve as the lead technical contact on projects and proposals using neutron polarization.
  • Develop external collaborations with other institutions developing similar or complimentary techniques.
  • Collaborate with internal and external scientists on neutron scattering experiments.
  • Support development and routine operation of polarization devices including spin-polarized 3He.
  • Work with and provide direction to staff from technical and operational support organizations.
  • Ensure and monitor compliance with environment, safety, health, and quality program requirements. Promptly identify ESH and QA issues and communicate them to project and division management, ESH and QA contacts, and/or subcontractor contacts as appropriate.
  • This position supports programs and facilities at HFIR and SNS that are operational 24 hours a day and seven days a week for extended run periods. Therefore, flexibility in work schedule is required and, intermittently, your support will be needed during off evening hours and on weekends to conduct your research program and assist with user experiments.
  • As a member of the ORNL scientific community, you will be expected to commit to ORNL's Research Code of Conduct.  Our full code of conduct, and a statement by the Lab Director's office can be found here:

Basic Qualifications:

  • Ph.D. in materials science, chemistry, physics, or related field
  • A minimum of 5 years of research experience using neutrons and neutron scattering
  • Demonstrated ability to lead complex technical projects and research programs. Ability to articulate and formulate a vision for developing strategic new capabilities
  • Demonstrated success in working with a multi-disciplinary team in a dynamic research environment
  • A strong record of scientific publication
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience developing polarized neutron devices.
  • Success in writing proposals for funding to pursue specific development objectives.

Other Requirements:

  • Please provide a list of publications when applying for this position.
  • If you are selected for interview, you will be required to submit a minimum of 2 letters of recommendation.

About Neutron Sciences Directorate:
The Neutron Sciences Directorate (NScD) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) operates the High Flux Isotope Reactor (HFIR), the United States’ highest flux reactor-based neutron source, and the Spallation Neutron Source (SNS), the world’s most intense pulsed accelerator-based neutron source. Together these facilities operate 30 instruments for neutron scattering research, each year carrying out in excess of 1,000 experiments in the physical, chemical, materials, biological and medical sciences for more than 3,000 visiting scientists. HFIR also provides unique facilities for isotope production and neutron irradiation. To learn more about Neutron Sciences at ORNL go to
