The Grid Interactive Controls Research Group (GICR) in the Electrification and Energy Infrastructure Division is seeking a R&D associated staff member. The GIC Group aims to improve grid security, reliability and resilience through everything-to-grid (X2G) integration by delivering innovative, multi-disciplinary, grid-interactive control solutions.


As part of our research team, you will be responsible for conducting, coordinating, and reporting complex research assignments related to buildings, specifically: 1) whole building energy modeling and calibration, and 2) performing experiments in ORNL's full scale test facilities, and 3) conducting data analysis. Your work will be interacting and collaborating with researchers from universities, national laboratories, and private industry. You will have the opportunity to interface directly with program sponsors and lead proposal development teams.


Major Duties/Responsibilities: 

  • Developing and validating data driven and high fidelity whole building energy modeling
  • Developing and deploying grid-interactive efficient building controls
  • Manage ORNL's user facility and coordinate with multiple researchers to perform tests on it.


Basic Qualifications:

  • A Ph.D. degree in Architecture, Architectural engineering, mechanical engineering, or related discipline.
  • Deep understanding of building thermal physics, HVAC systems, and building sensors and controls.
  • Expertise in whole building energy modeling (e.g., EnergyPlus, OpenStudio, and DOE-2), calibration and validation with empirical datasets.
  • Experiences in retrofit M&V and data analysis
  • Experiences in managing and performing experimental tests at full scale lab test buildings.


Preferred Qualifications:

  • Full scale EPlus and DOE-2.1E models validation with sub hourly high resolution building energy and environmental data sets from full scale test buildings.
  • Knoweldge of multizone building infiltration modeling with performing blower door tests and tracer gas tests.
  • Deep understanding of detailed building energy model calibration with sub hourly building energy and environmental data sets
  • Full modeling and calibration experiences with both commercial and residential building models
  • Knowledge of codes and standards associated with building energy performance (IECC, ASHRAE, etc.)
  • Knowledge of HVAC systems, load calculations, zone and building automation controls, and the ability to develop strategies to reduce energy consumption
  • Experience in thermal energy storage system research (including modeling, simulation, and calibration)
  • Experience in proposal writing
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Motivated self-starter with the ability to work independently and to participate creatively in collaborative teams across the laboratory
  • Ability to function well in a fast-paced research environment, set priorities to accomplish multiple tasks within deadlines, and adapt to ever changing needs
