STS Lead Instrument Engineer

Date: Sep 6, 2023

Location: Oak Ridge, TN, US, 37830

Company: Oak Ridge National Laboratory

Requisition Id 11325

We are seeking a Lead Instrument Engineer. The position resides in the Instrument Systems Engineering (ISE) Group within the Second Target Station (STS) Project at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL).

As a Lead Instrument Engineer, you will be a technical project manager responsible for the entire engineering design and execution of one or more neutron scattering instruments. Each instrument is a scientific experiment station with unique requirements and incorporates custom configurations of various mechanical and electronic components, many of which are one-of-a-kind articles. As a Lead Instrument Engineer, you will work alongside an Instrument Scientist who is responsible for the physics design of the instrument and for specifying the science requirements. You will participate in the design process but will also coordinate the work of other engineers and designers to ensure the instrument’s scientific objectives are met within the cost, schedule, and scope expectations of the STS Project. You will be responsible for overseeing the procurement and fabrication of components and beamline subsystems and will also work with installation supervisors during instrument construction. A Lead Instrument Engineer will also be responsible for the budget and schedule of your instrument. A Lead Instrument Engineer typically has a strong background in machine design and/or systems engineering. Prior experience with neutron scattering instruments is not a prerequisite for this position but would be beneficial.

Domestic and international travel is infrequent but will be required.

About the Second Target Station Project:

The Second Target Station (STS) is a >$2Billion Department of Energy project to be constructed at the ORNL Spallation Neutron Source (SNS) over the next decade. The STS will provide wholly new capabilities for the study of a broad range of materials with neutron scattering and support thousands of users from the physical, materials, and applied sciences as well as industry. The science capabilities provided by the instrument suite at the STS will complement those of the two existing neutron scattering user facilities at ORNL: the First Target Station (FTS) of the SNS and the High Flux Isotope Reactor (HFIR). The STS will deliver the highest peak brightness cold neutrons in the world, which together with advances in neutron optics, instrumentation, and detectors, will ensure U.S. leadership in neutron scattering for decades to come. STS will be capable of supporting 18 individual neutron scattering instruments (beamlines), each of which transports neutrons from the source to a shielded end station that houses a user-provided sample along with a suite of detectors. Please see http://neutrons.ornl.gov/sts for more information.
