Overview:

The Chemical Sciences Division at ORNL is inviting applications from outstanding senior science leaders with experience in the analytical sciences and with an emphasis in applications for nuclear processes for the position of Section Head of the Nuclear Analytical Chemistry (NAC) Section. The successful applicant will be responsible for the management and development of the section resources and capabilities for its applied and R&D portfolios focused in the areas of chemistry, forensics, nuclear non-proliferation and national/international security, production of anthropogenic isotopes and environmental stewardship. This position resides in the Chemicals Sciences Division (CSD), Physical Sciences Directorate (PSD) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL.)

 

As the NAC Section Head, you will be responsible for the pursuit of global scientific excellence in the analytical sciences while advancing strategic goals of our federal sponsors and strategic partners, enabling research and development of materials within the nuclear fuels cycle, advancing new nuclear technologies, and establishing pipelines for production of heavy isotopes and development for the next generation of nuclear reference materials for the nation. For these you will foster collaborations amongst the groups such that their impact will be greater as a whole and lead a highly functional and diverse team of peers with the primary goal of development and advancement of novel measurement methodologies for precise elemental and isotopic characterizations in environmental and nuclear matrices and the performance of fast-paced radiochemical routines on highly radioactive samples in support of the production of radioisotopes. vs operating as individual entities and organize teams to lead high impact projects. Last, you will evaluate and invest in the latest analytical technologies to keep section resources current.

 

Major Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Work closely with the division director and group leaders within the section to develop a vision and implement a strategy to pursue world-leading science and technology in the analytical sciences.
  • Promote the section to establish opportunities and collaborations with federal sponsors, strategic partners, and internal programs.
  • Assist group leaders in the initiation of new research directions and development of research proposals to contend for internal and external funding.
  • Work with group leaders to ensure research projects are executed effectively to deliver results on scope, schedule, and budget while meeting scientific, technical, and business expectations.
  • Advance the reputation of the group members and standing of the group through establishing collaborations, Professional Society leadership and involvement, and organization of technical events.
  • Drive staff promotions and development and work with the group leaders and the division director to assess and calibrate individual staff performance across the section.
  • Lead ESH&Q by engaging with staff to ensure all work is carried out safely, securely, and in compliance with ORNL policies, standards, and procedures.
  • Maintain effective communications concerning scientific efforts internal and external to the laboratory, including publication of results in peer-reviewed journals and presentation of results at scientific meetings.

Basic Qualifications:

  • A Ph.D. with a minimum of 12 years relevant experience leading R&D and/or technical teams for DOE and/or DOD nuclear projects
  • Experience in analytical sciences with an emphasis in applications for nuclear processes

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated a history of collaborative research experience (academic, industry, government agencies)
  • Experienced leader of research in plasma/thermal/electron bombardment ionization mass spectrometry.

  • Experienced leader of projects involving comprehensive radiochemical analyses.
  • Experienced leader of projects involving comprehensive high precision isotope ratio measurements. Related experience in separations chemistry particularly with the actinide elements would be beneficial.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Motivated self-starter with the ability to work independently and to participate creatively in collaborative teams across the laboratory.
  • Ability to lead in a fast-paced research environment, set priorities to accomplish multiple tasks on time and adapt to evolving needs.
