Overview:    

We are hiring a Senior AWS Cloud Engineer in the Digital Platform Services Group of the Digital Services Infrastructure & Operations Division of the Information Technology Services Directorate at Oak Ridge National Laboratory!

 

Cloud computing allows for the modernization and consolidation of IT infrastructure, automated workloads, and the pursuit of next-generation innovation. To continue this transformation, we’re seeking qualified applicants having expertise in the strategy, design, development, and implementation of large-scale projects in the cloud. The ideal candidate is experienced in cloud-based tech, with a firm grasp of new technologies, platforms, and applications, and ability to customize them to help our business become more secure and efficient.

Objectives of this Role:

  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to design, implement, and optimize AWS-based cloud infrastructure and services.
  • Define, document, and enforce best practices for application deployment, infrastructure maintenance, and security compliance within AWS environments.
  • Provide thought leadership and mentorship to teams, enhancing AWS cloud competencies across the organization.
  • Ensure high standards of application performance, scalability, and reliability in multi-account AWS environments.
  • Manage and secure AWS environments in compliance with company policies and federal security guidelines.

 

Major Duties/Responsibilities:   

 

Cloud Operations Management:

  • Provide technical expertise across AWS service categories, including IaaS, PaaS, and serverless architectures.
  • Design, build, maintain, document, and automate processes using tools like EC2, S3, Lambda, RDS, and CloudFormation.
  • Implement configuration and deployment automation to improve functionality, scalability, and manageability of AWS cloud offerings.
  • Develop and test disaster recovery (DR) and business continuity architectures for critical AWS resources.
  • Monitor and maintain AWS environments, ensuring adherence to business and operational requirements.

 

Continuous Improvement:

  • Design and deploy Infrastructure-as-Code (IaC) solutions using Terraform, CloudFormation, or similar tools.
  • Automate resource provisioning, configuration, and monitoring processes to enhance operational efficiency.
  • Optimize AWS resource usage to reduce costs through Reserved Instances, Savings Plans, and identifying unused resources.
  • Standardize log ingestion and monitoring using tools such as CloudWatch, CloudTrail, and Elastic.
  • Proactively implement monitoring solutions to detect and resolve performance and reliability issues.
  • Exhibit excellent interpersonal, written, and presentation skills to effectively collaborate with internal teams and external stakeholders.
  • Address incidents, identify root causes, resolve issues, and implement preventive measures.
  • Educate and train teams on implementing AWS-based initiatives, ensuring adherence to best practices.
  • Cultivate positive relationships with industry leaders and stakeholders to stay ahead in cloud innovations.

 

Problem Solving and Leadership:

  • Employ exceptional problem-solving skills to identify and resolve AWS-related issues before they impact operations.
  • Serve as a subject matter expert (SME) for AWS solutions, driving strategic initiatives and fostering collaboration across teams.

Basic Qualifications:  

  • A BS in business, computer science, computer engineering, electrical engineering, system analysis, or a related field of study with eight (8) to twelve (12) years of experience in cloud computing technologies is required for consideration. An overall combination of equivalent education and experience may be considered.
  • Proven experience with AWS services, including EC2, S3, Lambda, RDS, and VPC configurations.
  • Expertise in cloud infrastructure (firewalls, load balancers, DNS, DHCP) and security practices.
  • Proficiency in scripting and automation tools, including Terraform, PowerShell, CloudFormation, Ansible and Python

 

Preferred Qualifications: 

  • An advanced degree in business, computer science, computer engineering, electrical engineering, system analysis, or a related field with 7+ years of experience in cloud computing technologies.
  • AWS certifications, such as AWS Certified Solutions Architect, AWS Certified DevOps Engineer, or AWS Certified Security Specialist.
  • Experience in big data, ETL pipelines, machine learning, and advanced analytics using AWS services like Glue, Redshift, Athena, and SageMaker.
  • Strong understanding of identity and access management (IAM), authentication/authorization standards, and cross-account permissions.
  • Familiarity with hybrid cloud environments and solutions for multi-cloud deployments.
  • Ability to work independently on complex issues or collaboratively in a team environment.
  • Strong ability to present technical concepts in user-friendly, non-technical language.
