Overview:    

We are hiring a Senior Cloud Engineer in the Digital Platform Services Group of the Digital Services Infrastructure & Operations Division of the Information Technology Services Directorate at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL)!

 

Cloud computing allows for the modernization and consolidation of IT infrastructure, automated workloads, and the pursuit of next-generation innovation. To continue this transformation, we’re seeking qualified applicants having expertise in the strategy, design, development, and implementation of large-scale projects in the cloud. The ideal candidate is experienced in cloud-based tech, with a firm grasp of new technologies, platforms, and applications, and ability to customize them to help our business become more secure and efficient.

Objectives of this Role:

  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to design, implement, and optimize Azure-based cloud and AI solutions tailored to business and operational needs.
  • Define, document, and enforce best practices for application deployment, infrastructure maintenance, and AI integration.
  • Provide guidance, mentorship, and thought leadership to teams, enhancing cloud and AI competencies within the organization.
  • Ensure high standards of application performance, scalability, and reliability across multi-tenant Azure environments.
  • Manage and secure cloud environments in compliance with company policies and federal security guidelines, including AI-specific ethical standards.

 

Major Duties/Responsibilities:

   

Cloud Operations Management:

  • Provide technical expertise in Azure service categories, including IaaS, PaaS, and AI/ML services.
  • Design, build, maintain, document, and automate processes using tools like Azure Virtual Machines, Azure AI, Azure Cognitive Services, and Terraform.
  • Implement automation for configuration and deployment to improve functionality, scalability, and manageability of enterprise cloud and AI offerings.
  • Develop and test disaster recovery (DR) and business continuity architectures for critical Azure resources and AI workloads.
  • Monitor and maintain Azure environments, ensuring alignment with business and client requirements.
  • Design and deploy AI landing zones and integrate Azure AI services like Azure Machine Learning and Azure OpenAI into the cloud infrastructure.
  • Optimize AI/ML workflows to ensure seamless performance, cost-efficiency, and scalability.
  • Implement a continuously improving set of cloud and AI engineering practices to streamline operations and enable innovation.

 

Communications and Collaboration:

  • Exhibit excellent interpersonal, written, and presentation skills to effectively collaborate with internal teams and external stakeholders.
  • Proactively address incidents, identify root causes, resolve issues, and implement preventive measures.
  • Educate and train teams on implementing new Azure and AI-based initiatives, ensuring adoption of best practices.
  • Cultivate positive relationships with industry leaders and stakeholders to keep the organization at the forefront of cloud and AI innovations.
  • Employ exceptional problem-solving skills to identify and resolve cloud and AI-related issues before they impact productivity.
  • Serve as a subject matter expert (SME) for Azure and AI solutions, driving strategic initiatives and fostering collaboration across teams.

Basic Qualifications: 

  • A BS in business, computer science, computer engineering, electrical engineering, system analysis, or a related field of study with eight (8) to twelve (12) years of proven experience in cloud computing technologies. An overall combination of equivalent education and experience may be considered.
  • Proven experience with Azure Cloud and cloud infrastructure, including firewalls, load balancers, DNS, and DHCP.
  • Expertise with virtualization technologies such as VMware vCenter and vSphere.
  • Proficiency in scripting and automation tools, including Terraform, PowerShell, CloudFormation, Ansible and Python

 

Preferred Qualifications: 

  • An advanced degree in business, computer science, computer engineering, electrical engineering, system analysis, or a related field of study with seven (7) or more years of proven  experience in cloud computing technologies.
  • Azure certifications, such as Azure Solutions Architect Expert or Azure AI Engineer Associate.
  • Familiarity with Azure OpenAI and AI frameworks.
  • Experience in database architecture, ETL, business intelligence, big data, machine learning, and advanced analytics.
  • Strong understanding of authentication, authorization, identity, and access management.
  • Familiarity with hybrid cloud deployments and solutions addressing data challenges across multiple clouds.
  • Ability to work independently on complex issues or collaboratively in a team environment.
  • Strong ability to present technical ideas in a user-friendly, approachable manner.
