Overview:

The Performance Engineering Group at Oak Ridge National Laboratory is seeking a senior data architect to deliver innovative solutions that contribute to both groundbreaking scientific research and the implementation of regulatory, integrated data management solutions. The Performance Engineering Group resides within the Computing and Computational Sciences Directorate and goes past traditional approaches to develop new methods for meeting user needs across a wide range of domains. In this position, you will be intricately involved in the design of data systems needed to meet the program sponsor’s requirements with a focus on ensuring the most efficient data processing possible. More information on the Performance Engineering Group may be found at, https://www.ornl.gov/group/performance-engineering.

 

Major Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Identify and resolve data system performance bottlenecks by optimizing database queries, altering the database design, or recommending application modifications to ensure the most efficient data processing possible.
  • Direct the activities of System Administrators, DBAs, Cloud Architects, and Software Engineers in support of production data systems and applications.
  • Provide technical assistance to other staff and customers as necessary while striking a balance between lending expertise and providing an inclusive environment where others’ ideas are considered.
  • Establish best practices for data access that consider both security and performance.
  • Contribute to the design of data systems based on sponsor requirements.
  • Analyze new and emerging technologies and tools for applicability to the job.

 

Basic Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science, computer engineering, mathematics, or a related field and 8+ years of related experience.
  • Prior experience with any of the following database systems/types: relational (Oracle, MS SQL Server, MySQL, PostgresSQL, etc.), document (JSON, AWS DocumentDB, MongoDB, etc.), spatial, graph, and other unstructured databases.
  • In-depth knowledge and understanding of database system internals including relational database design, SQL coding, tuning, query optimization, index design, data partitioning, and ETL.
  • Prior experience troubleshooting applications and data system performance.
  • Ability to tune databases based on explain plans and overall system performance.
  • Experience leading multidisciplinary, collaborative teams to accomplish project objectives.
  • Effective skills in the following areas:
    • Verbal communication
    • Written communication
    • Interpersonal interactions
    • Conflict resolution
    • Mentoring of junior staff.
  • Experience with cloud solutions and delivery models (AWS preferred).

 

Special Requirement:

This position requires the ability to obtain a DOE L or Q clearance. As such, this position is a Workplace Substance Abuse (WSAP) testing designated position. WSAP positions require passing a pre-placement drug test and participation in an ongoing random drug testing program.

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with Oracle Database and Oracle PL/SQL.
  • Experience in a government environment.
  • Experience with structured and unstructured data.
  • Experience with data analysis, risk analysis, and data analytics.
  • Experience with Oracle Application Express (APEX)
  • Ability to function as a member of a multi-location team.
