Overview: 

Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) invites outstanding applications for a Senior Quantum Scientist position with experience and expertise in quantum science and engineering, microelectronics and electronic materials, photon science, or related areas, with a strong emphasis on the application of nanoscale materials technology to quantum information processing.  The Senior Quantum Scientist will provide leadership in quantum science and identify forefront opportunities in quantum science. This person will promote and enhance the quantum science and technology research programs across all R&D organizations within ORNL, raise the external visibility of ongoing quantum science at ORNL, and mentor staff.  The position would work with staff across ORNL to define and articulate a labwide Quantum Science strategy, including working with leadership in the Quantum Science Center, a DOE hub as well leadership in our BES materials program.  The position will be formally located within the Materials Science and Technology Division.

 

The MSTD (https://www.ornl.gov/division/mstd) is a multi-program, multi-disciplinary R&D division that couples basic and applied research to discover, design, and develop new materials and processes to enable new and improved energy technologies and processes, supporting a broad spectrum of R&D mission of the U.S. Department of Energy. The MSTD is one of the four R&D divisions under the Physical Sciences Directorate (PSD) of ORNL.

 

Major Duties/Responsibilities: 

  • Lead the formulation of an ORNL-wide forefront strategy for quantum information science and related scientific disciplines

  • Lead in the planning of ORNL-wide initiatives in areas of quantum information science and technology and related basic and applied materials science

  • Advise and assist leadership of the MSTD and the ORNL leadership team in the areas of materials, physical, and computational science research

  • Advise leadership of the QSC to ensure its successful performance meeting its mission of advancing the science of quantum materials, sensors, and algorithms

  • Present and report research results and publish scientific findings in peer-reviewed journals in a timely manner

  • Maintain a strong commitment to the implementation and perpetuation of ORNL values and ethics

  • Attract, motivate, mentor, and retain the caliber of staff required to accomplish ORNL’s mission

 

Basic Qualifications:

  • A PhD in Materials Science, Electrical Engineering, Physics, or a closely related science discipline and a minimum of 18 years of experience past the PhD

  • Internationally recognized leadership and impact in a broad scientific discipline of relevance, as evidenced by publication record, citation metrics, and record of contributions to science policy development

  • Elected member of one or more of the U.S. National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Recognized international authority who has far-reaching impact in scientific and technical activities and policies

  • Proven leadership qualities as well as excellent interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills, including the ability to communicate to an international, scientific audience

  • Motivated self-starter with the ability to work independently and to participate creatively in collaborative teams across the laboratory 

  • Ability to function well in a fast-paced research environment, set priorities to accomplish multiple tasks within deadlines, and adapt to ever changing needs
