The Geospatial Science and Human Security Division (GSHSD) is seeking a senior R&D Scientist within the Location Intelligence group. This position is within the Division’s Human Dynamics section and part of the National Security Science Directorate. The Location Intelligence Group performs ground-breaking research into place-based knowledge extraction, narrative analysis, and geosocial data discovery. Leveraging primarily “non-traditional” geospatial data sources such as volunteered geographic information (VGI), internet of things (IoT) data, and telemetered sensor sources, and harmonizing with commercial and open data sources, the Location Intelligence group delivers novel approaches and technologies for describing places, points of interest, events, activities, land use, populations, as well as the patterns of interaction among the three. The group’s dynamic content portfolio addresses the timely need to broaden research in network spatialization, narrative analysis, and transformation, routing, human mobility modeling, semantic web ontology, temporal dynamics to describe the landscape and patterns of activity within it, using novel and non-traditional data and theoretical techniques.


We seek applicants for the role of Senior Research Scientist in the Location Intelligence research and development (R & R&D) group. Senior staff coordinate with the group leader and section head to guide a vision and expand R&D strategy for the location intelligence group, manage and grow programs and their outputs, and actively participate in a diverse and well-rounded team to deliver highly unique capabilities to sponsors. The applicants are expected to assist in developing a novel Location Intelligence R&D portfolio and program activities.

Major Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Initiate, lead, and perform independent and impactful Location Intelligence R&D on an ongoing basis as evidenced by innovative S&T delivered to sponsors, successful proposals, S&T presentations, professional community engagement, inventions/patents/copyrights, publications as appropriate, etc.
  • Support the development of a cohesive group research strategy to build and grow research projects and expertise and continually position the group for future success in geospatial science.
  • Provide relevant input to assist the R&D Group Leaders with R&D portfolio development while providing direct and impactful guidance on establishing programs regularly.
  • Assist group leader in identifying and seizing new research programs and adapting existing research programs to unique sponsor needs.
  • Empower and inspire early career staff to think big, take appropriate risks in their work, and develop new skills to support continued growth.
  • Support in continually recruiting a high-quality and diverse pool of candidates and hiring staff members committed to world-class R&D and aspire to be the best in their field.

  • As needed, provide technical assistance to other employees and customers.
  • Develop and support the plan for project data analysis and management.


Basic Requirements:

  • Ph.D. in Computer Engineering, Computer Sciences, GIScience, geography with at least six years of related work experience
  • Relevant years of experience in spatio-temporal analysis, artificial intelligence, geospatial intelligence, spatial knowledge graphs, etc.
  • A proven track record of scholarship (e.g., publications, patents, copyrights, etc.).
  • At least five years of experience leading R&D projects, developing new programs, engineering, and geographically diverse analysis projects.
  • Proficiency in open-source or commercial geospatial tools such as ArcGIS, QGIS, and PostGIS.
  • Prior expertise with relational (MS SQL Server, MySQL, PostgreSQL, and so on), document (JSON, ElasticSearch, and so on), spatial, graph, and other unstructured databases is required.
  • Experience with Python, R, and other similar languages for data manipulation, exploration, graph analysis, and statistical analysis.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication and demonstrated ability to work in interdisciplinary teams.


Preferred Qualifications:

  • Familiarity with Federal agency-funded research programs and experience identifying, developing, establishing, and growing funded research projects/programs.
  • Experience working for or collaborating with DOE National Laboratories, academic institutions, other research organizations, and the private sector.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with a demonstrated leadership ability and a solid commitment to a teaming environment.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills.
  • Working knowledge of both structured and unstructured data.
  • Working knowledge of version control systems such as Git.
  • Experience with geospatial process design and implementation
  • Experience with database technologies such as MySQL and ElasticSearch to store, analyze, and manipulate data.
  • Experience in statistics, computational sciences, activity and event data, and volunteering geographic and social media data.
  • To deliver value, evaluate, and apply new geospatial technologies.
  • Assist in identifying, compiling, and evaluating geographic data sets to assist R&D.
