Senior Researcher in Digital - Twin Applications

Date: Jun 10, 2021

Location: Oak Ridge, TN, US, 37831

Company: Oak Ridge National Laboratory

Requisition Id 4549

The Computational Urban Sciences Group in the Computational Sciences and Engineering Division (CSED) at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) seeks to hire a senior researcher to lead and grow Digital-Twin and Digital Thread research, development, and deployment for transdisciplinary applications in domains such as the electric grid, transportation, building sciences, water resources, and the integration of renewables. The ideal candidate is expected to bring deep knowledge of data-driven computing with prior experience of applying such knowledge to the development of digital-twins. The ideal candidate should also have experience in engaging with stakeholders and effectively communicating the benefits of digital technologies for domain applications.

The Computational Urban Sciences Group is comprised of a multi-disciplinary team of scientists carrying out applied research at the intersection of computing and complex urban systems in the emerging environment of smart cities, energy infrastructures, a modernizing electric grid, smarter and sustainable mobility, responsive buildings, changing impacts of severe weather and climate, and data driven emergency response and resiliency. The advances are enabled by the growing body of technologies that includes big-data, modeling and simulation, machine learning, visualization, graph analytics, geovisualization, high-performance computing, and cloud computing. The candidate must be comfortable working as part of a tightly integrated team and must be capable of supporting multiple projects simultaneously.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Lead, develop, optimize, and transition digital-twin prototypes to robust implementations.
  • Maintain and enhance a strong knowledge profile of emerging technologies and be able to provide input on pros and cons on combinations of such technologies for building digital-twins.
  • Demonstrate the impact of digital-twins and digital-thread in urban system sciences for enabling scientific discoveries that are otherwise impossible to achieve.
  • Develop new concepts and proposals and lead programmatic engagement.
  • Adapt to changing needs of researchers and project sponsors.
  • Lead and maintain a strong publication record.

Basic Qualifications:

  • PhD in computer science; computer, computational, electrical, or mechanical engineering; geography; mathematics; or related disciplines and 6 years of experience.
  • Candidates must have demonstrated ability of having led and built digital-twins in transdisciplinary domains.
  • Maintain and enhance a strong knowledge profile related to digital-twin technologies.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Research experience in integrated data systems, co-simulation, and high-fidelity models that enable discoveries in domains such as real-time earth/urban system awareness, forecasting, energy studies at national/global scales, and knowledge of process uncertainty.
  • Knowledge of end-to-end processes and experience with implementation of digital-threads for scientific solutions is highly desirable.
  • Prior experience in developing scalable software solutions leveraging HPC, GPUs, AI/ML, big-data, and streaming data.
  • Experience in statistics, data visualization, geographic information systems, big-data mining, streaming data platforms, and simulation and modeling is desirable.
  • Strong social and communication skills and experience in working with multidisciplinary teams.
