Overview:
Oak Ridge National Laboratory is the largest US Department of Energy science and energy laboratory, conducting basic and applied research to deliver transformative solutions to compelling problems in energy and security. We are seeking a Software Developer who will support the Incident Modeling and Computational Sciences Group in the Nuclear Nonproliferation Division, National Security Sciences Directorate at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL).
Major Duties/Responsibilities:
- Participate in software development, quality assurance and life cycle management in areas related to nuclear nonproliferation and post-nuclear detonation forensics and consequence management.
- Advise R&D staff (e.g., nuclear engineers, physicists, chemists) with issues pertaining to code development, maintenance, and deployment, as well as computational analysis.
- Collaborate with researchers inside and outside ORNL to advance the technical and scientific missions of the group, laboratory, and sponsor.
- Interact regularly with senior scientists, program managers, group members, and prepare and present periodic reports documenting research and development activities.
- Publish papers with R&D staff in peer-reviewed journals, consistent with programmatic and legal restrictions regarding operational security and export control.
- Ensure compliance with environment, safety, health, and quality program requirements.
- Maintain strong dedication to the implementation and perpetuation of values and ethics.
Basic Qualifications:
- An Bachelor’s Degree and a minimum of 2 years experience. A combination of education and experience may also be considered.
- Experience with software development life cycle.
- Experience writing and maintaining code, preferably with experience in C++, C, Python, Fortran, Java, and Qt.
- Experience working in multi-disciplinary teams across all phases of the software development life cycle.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Familiarity of Science and Technology issues associated with nuclear nonproliferation and counterproliferation.
- Experience in work related to relevant offices within DOE and NNSA.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills
- Motivated self-starter with the ability to work independently and to participate creatively in collaborative teams across the laboratory
- Ability to function well in a fast-paced research environment, set priorities to accomplish multiple tasks within deadlines, and adapt to ever changing needs

Special Requirements
Q clearance: This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a clearance from the Department of Energy. As such, this position is a Workplace Substance Abuse (WSAP) testing designated position. WSAP positions require passing a pre-placement drug test and participation in an ongoing random drug testing program.
