Overview:  

 

We are seeking a Software Engineer to join the Data Engineering Group within the Data and AI Systems Research Section.  We are looking for an experienced engineer who will focus on the design, development and operation of complex solutions needed for world-class data systems that support scientific research and the national security mission through scalable and secure implementations of the FAIR (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, and Reusable) data principles.​​  More information about our group may found at, https://www.ornl.gov/group/data-engineering.

 

Our group is part of the Computer Science and Mathematics Division within the Computing and Computational Sciences Directorate, at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL).  

 

Major Duties/Responsibilities: 

 

  • Contribute to requirements definition, design, and development of applications providing solutions to sponsor needs.
  • Conduct applied research into new and emerging technologies and tools to identify opportunities for integration, application, and innovation.
  • Assist in deploying releases to development, test and production environments.
  • Collaborate with team members to support production applications.
  • Provide technical assistance to other staff and customers as necessary.

Basic Qualifications:

 

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or a related field and 3+ years of software engineering experience.
  • Demonstrated experience working with Python.
  • Demonstrated experience working with text data and and natural language processing techniques.
  • Demonstrated experience working with deep learning frameworks like PyTorch and Tensorflow.

 

Preferred Qualifications:

 

  • Experience working with multiple programming languages in addition to python, such as Java, Javascript, C++, SQL, Oracle PL/SQL.
  • A broad understanding of the application aspects of natural language processing and data science methodologies and techniques, (e.g. supervised and unsupervised learning, feature selection/engineering, hyperparameter optimization, dimensionality reduction, word embeddings, etc.).
  • Experience building web applications and their supporting background data services using modern technologies.
  • Experience with any of the following database systems/types: relational (PostgresSQL, Oracle, MySQL), document (AWS DocumentDB, MongoDB, etc.), spatial, graph, and other unstructured databases.
  • Excellent communication and writing skills.
  • Commitment to continuous learning to serve in an ever-changing computing landscape.
  • Experience with agile software development methodologies.
  • Experience with version control systems like Git.
  • Experience with automated deployment and testing environments.
  • Experience with scientific data and data formats is a plus.
  • Experience with High Performance Computing environments is a plus.
  • Experience developing desktop applications for Windows, MacOS and Linux is a plus.

 

 

Special Requirement:

 

This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a clearance from the Department of Energy. As such, this position is a Workplace Substance Abuse (WSAP) testing designated position. WSAP positions require passing a pre-placement drug test and participation in an ongoing random drug testing program.
