The Enrichment Systems Engineering Section within the Enrichment Science and Engineering Division (ESED) is seeking a Sr. Chemical Process Design Engineer for the Testbed Design and Engineering Group. This group is focused on providing designs for mechanical and chemical testbeds used in the development and deployment of isotope enrichment devices. This group also provides the design for production systems deployed for Stable Isotope Enrichment at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL).

ESED is the national steward for the research, development, and demonstration of centrifuge technology. The successful candidate will provide research and development (R&D) leadership within the group that strategically advances science and technology focused on gas testing of prototype enrichment devices for processing uranium-bearing and stable isotope compounds.


Major Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Leads the process design of complex testbeds for evaluating and researching enrichment devices as well as production systems for stable isotopes enrichment.
  • The testbeds are used in the development and execution of complex test plans involving significant data collection and interpretation, assessment of results, and incorporation of steps for continuous improvement of processes and communication of activities to senior research staff and management.
  • The candidate will be responsible for understanding and contributing to detailed formal process designs, instrumentation drawings, testing/analysis plans, and fabrication plans in coordination with stakeholder personnel.
  • Will report to and works closely with the Testbed Design and Engineering Group Leader to implement the group’s scientific vision; mentors group members to enable career advancement; establishes capabilities that enable programs to excel at the forefront of science and technology; performs R&D to advance the field of knowledge and/or technology in one’s respective specialty; shepherds, implements, and models standards for performance of work consistent with Environment, Safety, Security, Health, and Quality (ESH&Q) requirements and business rules.
  • Will be required to effectively interact with various personnel and sponsors, both within and outside of ORNL.
  • The candidate is expected to be able to be a technical leader in a team environment.
  • It is expected the successful candidate will work collaboratively with co-workers and management as well as independently, to fully document work performed in the forms of technical reports and presentations, and to participate in the development of research proposals. 
  • The successful candidate will interface with principal investigators, management, engineers, fabricators, modelers and test campaign personnel.


Basic Qualifications:

  • Requires a Ph.D. with a minimum of 4 years relevant experience, a M.S. with a minimum of 7 years experience, or a B.S. with 10 years experience in an Engineering, Chemistry, Physics or related field of study.
  • Experience in process design including the following
    • System requirements generation,
    • PFD and P&ID generation, and
    • Material balance, equipment sizing and safety basis calculations
  • Demonstrated expertise in complex system process design and testing.
  • The ability to work flexible hours and travel when required.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Proven ability to function well in a fast-paced research environment, set priorities to accomplish multiple tasks within deadlines, and adapt to ever changing needs


Preferred Qualifications:

  • Knowledge of the theory and application of gas and liquid phase chemical engineering principles with experience in reactive gas operations is desired
  • Control System Narrative expertise to assist in optimizing system parameters
  • Ideal candidate would have experience with applicable coding languages such as PYTHON, C++, C Sharp, or other common languages used in software development
  • Test Engineer experience
  • Active DOE Q Clearance


Special Requirements:

This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a DOE Q clearance from the US Department of Energy. As such, this position is a Workplace Substance Abuse (WSAP) testing designated position. WSAP positions require passing a preplacement drug test and participation in an ongoing random drug testing program.
