Overview:

Oak Ridge National Laboratory is seeking research scientists in the areas of artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning (ML) and statistics.  Oak Ridge National Laboratories is a leader in computational and computer science, with unique strengths in high-performance computing and data analytics with applications to the physical and biological sciences. 

 

Specific areas of research interest include

  • Machine and statistical learning algorithms, including optimization and approximate algorithms that address issues in algorithmic complexity, online or continuous learning, encoding and transfer learning, and reinforcement learning,
  • Physics-informed AI, including the application of AI/ML to physical and biological sciences and the interface between AI and traditional modeling and simulation and theory,
  • Computational scalability and performance of AI/ML algorithms, including both the ability to use computing hardware efficiently and the scaling of algorithms and HPC implementations,
  • Uncertainty quantification, sensitivity analysis, validation, and explainability of AI/ML systems, particularly for high-consequence application areas, such as control systems, and
  • Statistics and data analytics, especially computational statistics and the ability to deal with sparse or missing data.


Major Duties and Responsibilities:

  •  Lead high quality, basic and applied research projects and programs in artificial intelligence and machine learning algorithm with applications to biological and physical sciences
  • Integrate research in AI/ML workflows and algorithms on high performance computing systems
  • Collaborate with internal and external researchers on a wide variety of AI/ML research and projects
  • Collaborate with application scientists inside and outside of the laboratory to advance the scientific mission of the group, laboratory, the Department of Energy and other sponsors
  • Interact with the appropriate program offices and other agencies to develop and maintain program funding for basic and applied research in relevant areas of AI and ML
  • Represent group-level work to review committees and outside bodies as appropriate,
  • Write peer-reviewed papers, technical reports, and proposals for internal and external release and represent the organization by giving technical presentations in large public forums
  • Mentor early career research staff, postdocs and students
  • Maintain membership in professional, academic, and research organizations.

 Basic Qualifications:

  • A Ph.D. in mathematics, statistics, computer science or related area with 10+ years of research experience in AI or ML, outside of Ph.D.
  • This position requires at least 5 years of experience in program management and/or research management at a large research institution, or government entity.

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • The ability to conduct independent and significant research and a demonstrated research capability with a publication record in AI/ML,
  • Experience developing new business,
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively interact with senior levels of client management and others involved in technical endeavors,
  • Demonstrated ability to write research plans and proposals and to project a vision for future research relevant to AI and ML,
  • A successful record of developing research partnerships and collaborative relationships with universities, industry, and research laboratories is necessary,
  • Experience in high-performance computing and software development,
  • The ability to communicate effectively in both verbal and written forms,
  • Flexibility in research assignments,
  • Ability to collaborate with scientists, engineers, and sponsors,
  • Experience in one or more engineering or science applications of AI/ML, and
  • Previous experience mentoring students and/or postdocs.
