The Nuclear Nonproliferation Division (NND) is a division operating within the National Security Sciences Directorate at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL). The NND performs research and development to detect, characterize, and monitor nuclear fuel cycle activities and nuclear explosions; develops concepts, approaches, and technologies to strengthen global security for nuclear and radiological material; and engages with federal agencies to enhance international nonproliferation regimes.

 

Within the NND, the Detonation Forensics and Response (DFR) group focuses on nuclear detonation fallout prediction for support of improved capabilities in detonation characterization and forensics and provides enhanced tools to support incident response and consequence management. The DFR group seeks applications for a Sr. Software Manager who will: oversee the group’s software development and deployment activities, maintain a continuous integration / continuous deployment (CI/CD) environment on Windows, Mac, and Linux machines, prepare software releases, develop user manuals and training materials, and advise and mentor both software development and research staff.

 

Job Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Lead software management activities in areas related to nuclear nonproliferation and post- detonation nuclear forensics and consequence management.
  • Lead and advise a software development team in support of research and development needs.
  • Advise R&D staff (e.g., nuclear engineers, physicists, chemists) with issues pertaining to code development, maintenance, deployment, user feedback and training.
  • Collaborate with researchers inside and outside ORNL to advance the technical and scientific missions of the group, laboratory, and sponsor.
  • Interact regularly with senior scientists, program managers, group members, and prepare and present periodic reports documenting research and development activities.
  • Publish papers with R&D staff in peer-reviewed journals, consistent with programmatic and legal restrictions regarding operational security and export control.
  • Ensure compliance with environment, safety, health, and quality program requirements.
  • Maintain strong dedication to the implementation and perpetuation of values and ethics.
  • Mentor early career software staff,  technicians, and students. 

 

 

Qualifications Requirements: 

 

  • A Ph.D. in a computer science, software engineering, or related field with a minimum of 4 years relevant experience, an M.S. in a computer science, software engineering, or related field with a minimum of 7 years’ experience, or a B.S. in computer science, software engineering, or related field with a minimum of 8 years relevant experience.
  • Extensive experience with all stages of the software development life cycle.
  • Extensive experience writing and maintaining code.
  • Experience leading multi-disciplinary teams in the software development life cycle.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with a demonstrated leadership ability and a strong commitment to a teaming environment.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills.
  • Ability to travel domestically and internationally.

 

Qualifications Preferred: 

  • Experience with the following languages and frameworks: C, C++, Java, Python, Fortran, CMake, and Qt.
  • Experience with DevSecOps and containerization.
  • Knowledge of science and technology issues associated with nonproliferation and counterproliferation.
  • Demonstrated experience in program development, preferably with relevant offices within DOE and NNSA.

 

Special Requirement:

This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a clearance from the Department of Energy.
