Overview:
We are seeking a Superconducting Magnet R&D Associate who will focus on developing and leading superconducting magnet testing and development as it pertains to fusion and other high field enabled environments and applications. The successful candidate will be working with a new University of Tennessee-Oak Ridge Innovation Institute (UTORII) project developing materials for extreme applications with a focus on fusion environments. This work will be focused on developing new capabilities for testing materials response to coupled extreme environment where high temperature, irradiation, plasma erosion, magnetic field, or combinations thereof are present. As part of UT-ORII, the candidate will have the opportunity to work collaboratively with a team of University of Tennessee faculty, postdoctoral associates, and students in the Nuclear Engineering, Materials Science and Engineering, and Physics Departments, as well as scientists at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory.
This position resides in the Fusion Technology Group of the Fusion Nuclear Science and Technology Section of the Fusion Energy Directorate (FED) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory.
Major Duties/Responsibilities:
- Support developing and performing complex research and engineering projects related to superconducting magnets, associated cryogenic materials and systems, and fusion hardware.
- Analyze complex systems involving cryogenic temperatures, electromagnetic stress, and magnetic fields to develop unique solutions to integrated problems.
- Communicate results of analyses and experiments through presentations, reports, conference papers, and peer-reviewed journals.
- Work and lead multi-disciplinary projects with private and public partners across industrial, university, and research organizations.

Basic Qualifications:
- A PhD in electrical, material science, or mechanical engineering or a related discipline with two years of related experience, or a MS degree in these areas with at least five years of related experience.
- Experience with designing, building, and operating superconducting materials and magnets and relevant cryogenic refrigeration system and hardware.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience with solid modeling and finite element analysis codes as it relates to electromagnetic interactions of coil assemblies, the modeling of cryogenic/superconducting properties, and/or thermodynamic/heat transfer analysis in cryogenic environments is preferred.
- Prior experience in magnet design, procurement, and fabrication in high field environments with high temperature superconducting materials is highly desirable.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills.
- Motivated self-starter with the ability to work independently and to participate creatively in collaborative teams across the laboratory.
- Ability to function well in a fast-paced research environment, set priorities to accomplish multiple tasks within deadlines, and adapt to ever changing needs.
Special Requirements:
- This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain an HSPD-12 PIV badge.
