Overview:

Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) is the largest US Department of Energy science and energy laboratory, conducting basic and applied research to deliver transformative solutions to compelling problems in energy and security. Our diverse capabilities span a broad range of scientific and engineering disciplines, enabling the Laboratory to explore fundamental science challenges and to carry out the research needed to accelerate the delivery of solutions to the marketplace. We are seeking a professional to fill a Technical Professional Staff position in the Integrated Building Deployment and Analysis Group in the Buildings and Transportation Sciences Division (BTSD), Energy Science and Technology Directorate at ORNL. The group consists of a team of highly motivated researchers conducting research in world-class facilities. The work supports the U.S. DOE Building Technology Office and other customers by developing and deploying advanced building technologies for energy efficiency, reduced carbon emissions, grid integration, and improved life cycle climate performance. This position requires working with external partners, corporations, and sponsors to lead project planning for deployment of these technologies. Selection will be based on qualifications, relevant experience, skills, and education.

 

Major Duties / Responsibilities:

The successful candidate will be the principal investigator for projects related to demonstration and deployment of affordable, energy efficient, and net-zero carbon building systems at the community scale. Major responsibilities consist of the following:

  • Leading major demonstration and deployment projects, including overseeing the work of junior researchers, post-docs, and technicians; responsible for achieving milestones on time and within budget.
  • Conducting technology, market and policy assessments for optimized building system solutions (for residential and commercial buildings including new construction and retrofits).
  • Working with stakeholders including industry partners from across the U.S.
  • Developing research proposals to major funding agencies.
  • Presenting and reporting research results and publishing scientific findings in peer-reviewed journals.

 

Basic Qualifications:

  • The successful candidate must have a Ph.D. in Architecture, Engineering, or a closely related field plus a minimum of three years of post-PhD relevant work experience. Experience in leading the design and/or project management of new construction or building retrofits is required.
  • Building science knowledge is required.
  • Excellent communications skills are required. 
  • The qualified applicant must work well with others, and have the ability to independently identify and solve challenging technical problems.
  • This individual must possess a strong commitment to ethical and professional values as well as maintain a compliance with environmental, safety, health, and quality standards.

 

Preferred Qualifications:

The candidate should have the ability to lead teams of engineers and technicians to successfully manage demonstration and deployment of affordable, energy efficient, and net-zero carbon building systems at the community scale. Excellent interpersonal skills to support team building, partnering, and leadership are required.
