Purpose

The Nuclear Security Modeling (NSM) group within the Nuclear Nonproliferation Division (NND), Nuclear Security Sciences Directorate, Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL), seeks highly motivated applicants for software development, with emphasis in the development of modeling and simulation software used for nuclear security applications.

 

Main Duties and Responsibilities

 

The successful candidate will be responsible for implementing and testing software enhancements across a suite of nuclear security modeling tools. Software will be written in, but not limited to: Fortran, C++, Java and Python. Development efforts include: meteorological dispersion, component integration, continuous integration, emergency response, health physics, testing and documentation. Additional responsibilities include the support of multiple platforms and operating systems such as Android, Windows, Mac and Linux, desktop, mobile and web; and general technical support for nuclear engineering staff and end users.

 

The selected candidate will be responsible for interacting with staff working on projects in a team environment. The candidate is expected to be able to work independently, participate in weekly development cycles and lead software development tasks, fully document work performed, and effectively interface with project managers and developers.

 

Qualifications

 

Candidates must have an MS or a BS and equivalent experience in computer science, computer engineering, meteorology, nuclear engineering, or a related field. Experience in or an understanding of software development cycles is desirable, but the skills for learning and interest in software development cycles is essential.

 

The candidate must have demonstrated problem-solving skills and a willingness to apply those skills to a variety of problems. Excellent communication skills including verbal, presentation and writing skills are required to enable effective interaction with technical peers and program managers.

 

This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a clearance from the Department of Energy. As such, this position is a Workplace Substance Abuse (WSAP) testing designated position. WSAP positions require passing a pre-placement drug test and participation in an ongoing random drug testing program

 

 

Work Directions and Interfaces

 

The NSM group is an applied nuclear engineering group that utilizes its expertise in theory, modeling and experimentation to analyze the security implications in the production, processing, diversion and detonation of nuclear materials. The group's core area of expertise includes reactor physics and nuclear data; nuclear chemical engineering; nuclear safeguards and detection modeling; nuclear forensics and attribution; and nuclear weapons physics and fallout. The group has applied its expertise in applications such as the production of plutonium in reactors; spent fuel assay and verification; passive nuclear measurements modeling; active interrogation systems modeling; reactor physics measurements and modeling; and nuclear fallout modeling and analysis.
