Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) is seeking Nuclear Operations Advanced Technology Technicians who will focus on production, handling, and packaging of a variety of nuclear materials, as well as performing material handling equipment setup, troubleshooting , and acceptance testing within remote operations environments.  Supporting the largest radioisotope production and research portfolio within the Department of Energy (DOE) Office of Science for Isotope R&D and Production, as well as extensive isotope production programs for the DOE Office of Nuclear Energy and National Nuclear Security Administration, this position will grant you the opportunity to work with rare nuclear materials and ensure the safe and effective manufacturing of radioisotopes.This position resides within the Material Operations Group within the newly formed Isotope Processing and Manufacturing Division (IPMD) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL). The IPMD is focused on the reliable delivery of radioisotope products to exacting quality standards. This work is performed within the unique facilities at ORNL, including the High Flux Isotope Reactor (HFIR), and several radiological and nuclear facilities throughout the ORNL campus containing shielded hot cells and gloveboxes. In this role you will work to create a production and reliability focused environment, so that ORNL can be successful in meeting our mission to supply critical nuclear materials for science, medicine, and industry, that no one else can.


Major Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Under the guidance of research and technical staff, setup, test, and maintain prototype remote electro-mechanical and chemical processing equipment.  Document activities and findings.
  • Following documented procedures, operate electro-mechanical and chemical processing equipment and handle nuclear materials within shielded hot cell facilities using remote mechanical manipulators and by hand within glove boxes.
  • Assembling, testing, integrating, and operating process/production equipment for new and enduring remote operations with radioactive materials within hot cells, shielded caves, and glove boxes at REDC and other facilities.
  • Fabrication and assembly of long-form targets and short-form capsules for irradiation in HFIR
  • Ensure compliance with Environment, Safety and Health (ES&H) and QA requirements.

Basic Qualifications:

  • 2 or more years of relevant technical experience, with demonstrated knowledge of safe handling of chemicals and hazardous materials
  • Ability to work and communicate effectively with diverse teams of engineers, scientists, and technicians.


 Preferred Qualifications:

  • A.S. or A.A.S. degree in chemical, mechanical, nuclear, industrial engineering technology.
  • Manufacturing experience in an R&D and/or a production environment
  • Electro-mechanical fabrication experience
  • Experience with work control, conduct of operations in an R&D or production environment
  • Experience operating with master-slave manipulators, or within glove boxes is preferred.
  • Experience following NQA-1 protocols is preferred.

Special Requirements:

This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a clearance from the Department of Energy. As such, this position is a Workplace Substance Abuse (WSAP) testing designated position. WSAP positions require passing a pre-placement drug test and participation in an ongoing random drug testing program.
