We are seeking a research associate staff member who will focus on developing and applying advanced transmission electron microscopy and scanning transmission electron microscopy characterization methods in support of the Center for Nanophase Materials Sciences (CNMS) Scientific User Program, with the main focus of working directly with and recruiting scientific users. This position resides in the Materials MicroÅnalysis Group in the Nanomaterials Characterization Section, Center for Nanophase Materials Sciences, Physical Sciences Directorate at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL).   


As part of our research team, you will be responsible for conducting a broad range of aberration-corrected S/TEM imaging, analytical electron microscopy and in situ S/TEM experiments in addition to analyzing and interpreting results using a suite of advanced electron microscopes including 4 aberration-corrected instruments (Nion UltraSTEM100, JEOL NeoARM, TFS Titan), one monochromated instrument (Nion MacSTEM) and specialized in situ TEM systems. The successful candidate is expected to collaborate across CNMS research groups to develop data analysis workflows.


Major Duties/Responsibilities: 

  • Conduct materials characterization research using aberration-corrected STEM, EELS, and EDS within the CNMS user program
  • Develop data analysis approaches for a range of electron microscopy datasets
  • Collaborate with CNMS staff members within and external to ORNL
  • Be responsible for presenting and reporting research results and publish scientific results in peer-reviewed journals in a timely manner
  • Work safely and in compliance with all environment, safety, health and quality program requirements

Basic Qualifications:

  • A Ph.D. degree in Materials Science & Engineering, Physics, Chemistry or a related field
  • A minimum of 3 years of hands-on experience in aberration corrected STEM imaging, analytical electron microscopy, and/or in situ microscopy
  • Programming and data analysis skills


Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with multiple microscopy techniques TEM, STEM, Electron Diffraction, Spectroscopy (EDS and EELS) and in situ TEM techniques (e.g. heating, biasing, gas and liquid)
  • Proficient in Python programming for data analysis
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Motivated self-starter with the ability to work independently and to participate creatively in collaborative teams across the laboratory 
  • Ability to function well in a fast-paced research environment, set priorities to accomplish multiple tasks within deadlines, and adapt to ever changing needs
