Quantum Sensing of Quantum Devices - R&D Associate

Date: Mar 28, 2024

Location: Oak Ridge, TN, US, 37830

Company: Oak Ridge National Laboratory

Requisition Id 10644

Overview:

We are looking for an R&D Associate for Oak Ridge National Laboratory’s Quantum Heterostructures Group. In this role, you will contribute to team research efforts focused on probing superconducting, magnetic, and topological phase transitions using cryogenic quantum sensing modalities that include squeezed optical probes and spin-based quantum sensors. You will have access to a mK optical microscopy platform, variable-temperature quantum sensing platforms, and to a dilution refrigerator optimized for dc and rf transport of quantum devices. You will work with a larger team to develop new quantum sensing modalities and combine device-scale measurements of quantum states with operando optical and quantum optical probes of quantum materials. This position resides in the Quantum Heterostructures Group, Materials Science and Technology (MST) Division, Physical Sciences Directorate (PSD) at ORNL.

This position is supported by the Materials Sciences and Engineering (MSE) Program and by the Department of Energy Quantum Science Center (QSC), a National Quantum Information Science Research Center. You will engage with collaborators across the MSE program at ORNL and with QSC researchers across a network of universities, national laboratories, and industry in highly collaborative research efforts.

Major Duties/Responsibilities:

The expected duties and responsibilities include some but not necessarily all of the following:

  • Probe spin fluctuations and quantum phase transitions using optically-accessible spin defects
  • Measure spontaneous time-reversal symmetry breaking in a non-perturbative manner using quantum optical probes
  • Characterize basic properties of topological materials integrated in superconducting resonators using rf spectroscopies at mK temperatures
  • Develop a science program to secure additional Office of Science based funding
  • Deliver ORNL’s mission by aligning behaviors, priorities, and interactions with our core values of Impact, Integrity, Teamwork, Safety, and Service
  • Promote diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility by fostering a respectful workplace – in how we treat one another, work together, and measure success

Basic Qualifications:

  • PhD in physics, materials science, or a closely related science discipline
  • Experience in experimental quantum sensing and/or quantum device physics

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Extensive experience with experimental quantum sensing and quantum photonics
  • Extensive experience with quantum device fabrication and characterization
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills and the ability to communicate to an international scientific audience
  • Familiarity with numerical data analysis and customization of control software (Labview/Matlab/Python)
  • A strong record of productive and creative research proven by publications in peer-reviewed journals and presentations at major conferences
  • Ability to work with a measure of autonomy in a team environment
  • Ensure compliance with environment, safety, health and quality program requirements

Special Requirements:

  • Please provide a list of publications when applying for this position.
  • Three letters of reference are required and can be uploaded to your profile or emailed directly to PSDrecruit@ornl.gov.  Please include the title of the position in the subject line.

This position will remain open for a minimum of 5 days after which it will close when a qualified candidate is identified and/or hired.

We accept Word (.doc, .docx), Adobe (unsecured .pdf), Rich Text Format (.rtf), and HTML (.htm, .html) up to 5MB in size. Resumes from third party vendors will not be accepted; these resumes will be deleted and the candidates submitted will not be considered for employment.
