Purpose:

The Manufacturing Energy Efficiency Research & Analysis (MEERA) Group in the Manufacturing Science Division (MSD) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) is seeking applicants for a technical professional position including communications support in the area of energy efficiency and decarbonization for industry sector. This position augments ORNL's industrial energy efficiency and decarbonization team that is operating in support of DOE's Better Plants and Better Climate Challenge programs. The mission of the MEERA group is to research, analyze, and disseminate knowledge on energy, carbon, water, and material efficiency in the manufacturing sector and develop, deploy, and promote impactful practices, tools, and technologies. MEERA group is a part of ORNL’s Manufacturing Science Division in the Energy Science and Technology Directorate. The position is located in Oak Ridge, TN.

 

Through its energy efficiency & decarbonization technical assistance programs, MEERA group develops a diverse portfolio of industrial energy efficiency tools and resources which are delivered to the manufacturing sector through various technical assistance and training events worldwide. MEERA group actively supports industry partners in improving manufacturing plant energy efficiency and decarbonization via roles in the U.S. Department of Energy’s Better Plants and Better Climate Challenge programs.

 

Major Duties/Responsibilities:

You will have following duties/responsibilities:

  • Assist ORNL’s Better Plants team in organizing virtual in-plant trainings (VINPLTs), managing virtual training sessions online, working with DOE system experts in developing training documents, quizzes, etc. VINPLTs offered by the Better Plants program are multi-session virtual trainings delivered by industry-recognized experts. VINPLTs include virtual training sessions that train the attendees to identify energy conservation opportunities, quantify savings from those opportunities, and implement projects to realize the energy and cost savings.
  • Assist ORNL’s Better Plants team in organizing in-person in-plant trainings (INPLTs), Energy Bootcamps, and Carbon Bootcamps. Candidate will maintain in-person in-plant training and bootcamp databases and develop monthly program impact reports to share with DOE program manager. The candidate will assist in developing training agendas, interact with energy experts, and manufacturing companies to coordinate training activities.
  • Work with ORNL’s Better Plants program manager and maintain technical resources (reports, fact sheets, software tools, etc.) on DOE as well as ORNL Better Plants websites.
  • Provide communications support to the Better Plants and Better Climate program.  The candidate will author articles, blogs, and reports on the topics of Energy Efficiency, Decarbonization and Sustainability.
  • Demonstrate proficiency in Excel and be able to perform data processing, manage databases, and perform quality checks to support DOE Better Plants Reporting.
  • Support the development of effective communication strategies and lead efforts to disseminate program information to industrial stakeholders.
  • Lead efforts to follow up with Better Plants Partners on the implementation of the identified energy savings opportunities from INPLT, VINPLT and other Better Plants activities; identifying barriers and success factors for the implementation of identified opportunities.

Basic Qualifications:

  • A BS in mechanical engineering, industrial engineering, engineering management, environmental science, business or related discipline, or MS / MBA degree in energy management, environment and science communication, or related disciplines. At least one year of experience with energy efficiency management, or environment and science communication, and/or projects support activities is desired.
  • Proficiency with the use of Excel and/or other tools in engineering data reduction and analysis is preferred.
  • Knowledge of environmental science, energy efficiency, decarbonization, utility energy service contracts, and mechanical systems and controls is desired.
  • Ability to work creatively and cooperatively as a member of an interdisciplinary research team.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills to support regular interactions with Laboratory staff, sponsors, industry, and academia and to prepare reports, proposals, publications and journal articles are required.
  • Demonstrate strong interpersonal and communication skills to support team building, partnering and leadership.

 

Willing to travel. You will be involved in meetings with DOE sponsors in Washington DC and will attend key conferences and workshops. Travel will be periodically required to visit manufacturing facilities. Travel is estimated at 3-4 times per year.
