Neutron Scattering Scientist - Single Crystal Diffraction

Date: Aug 7, 2024

Location: Oak Ridge, TN, US, 37830

Company: Oak Ridge National Laboratory

Requisition Id 13306

Overview:

The Neutron Sciences Directorate (NScD) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) is seeking Neutron Scattering Scientists for the Single Crystal Diffraction Group at the Spallation Neutron Source (SNS) and High Flux Isotope Reactor (HFIR). Our group is part of the diffraction section and operates two instruments at HFIR and three at the SNS. These instruments support a diverse science community, attracting scientists from all over the world, carrying out world-class research in physical, chemical and materials sciences! More details about the instruments and their science impact can be found at https://single-crystal.ornl.gov/.

We are seeking scientists for the single crystal time-of-flight Laue diffractometer (TOPAZ), focusing on structural chemistry and chemical crystallography, time-of-flight diffuse scattering diffractometer (CORELLI) optimized for studying the complex magnetic and structural disorder in single-crystal materials at SNS, and the reactor-based Dimensional Extreme Magnetic Neutron Diffractometer (DEMAND) optimized for magnetic and crystal structures for small unit cell systems with polarization capabilities.

As a core team member, you will develop a leading scientific program focused on neutron scattering and champion advancements in instrumentation, sample environment, and software to enhance the instrument's performance, capabilities, and user base. Your role includes ensuring safe operation and user support of the beamlines, assisting with experimental setup, data acquisition, and analysis. You will collaborate with users on diverse science topics and have the opportunity to pursue your own research program using ORNL's unique neutron scattering resources.

Major Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Assist users as a local contact for experimental setup, data acquisition, user training and ensure users are provided with analyzable data.

  • Attract users from existing and new areas of research, particularly areas related to your own research, to expand the neutron scattering community and its impact on physical, chemical, and materials sciences.

  • Pursue a high-quality research program using neutron diffraction, build national and international collaborations, and publish research results in scientific journals.

  • Ensure compliance with environment, safety, health, and quality program requirements.

  • Help build and maintain an inclusive work environment for a diverse community of users, staff, postdocs, and students.

  • As a member of the ORNL scientific community, you will be expected to commit to ORNL's Research Code of Conduct. Our full code of conduct and a statement by the Lab Director's office can be found here: https://www.ornl.gov/content/research-integrity.

  • Deliver ORNL’s mission by aligning behaviors, priorities, and interactions with our core values of Impact, Integrity, Teamwork, Safety, and Service. Promote diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility by encouraging a respectful workplace – in how we treat one another, work together, and measure success.

Basic Qualifications:

  • PhD in chemistry, physics, materials science, or related field.

  • One or more years of relevant work experience beyond PhD. (We encourage applications from all experience levels and will hire commensurate with the applicant’s years of experience.)

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with neutron and/or X-ray single crystal diffraction and single crystal structure analysis.

  • A strong record of productive and creative research demonstrated by publications in peer-reviewed journals and presentations at scientific conferences.

  • Strong written and oral communication skills.

  • Proven ability to work in a multi-disciplinary team.

Special Requirements:

  • Please provide a list of publications when applying for this position.

  • If you are selected for interview, you may be required to submit a minimum of 2 letters of recommendation.
