Assistant Technician in Binder Jet Additive Manufacturing

This position will require the applicant to perform technical research tasks in advanced manufacturing with a focus on binder jet additive manufacturing. The research technician will enable ORNL’s efforts to become leaders in high-throughput, advanced manufacturing through operation and maintenance of equipment sample production, and materials prep.



The Department of Energy Manufacturing Demonstration Facility and the ­­­­Advanced Manufacturing Group at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) are seeking a technician to conduct laboratory research tasks, maintain laboratory space, and otherwise support research in support of the manufacturing R&D portfolio. The specific focus of this job posting is to fill a research need in the area of binder jet research.


Major Duties/Responsibilities:

The selected candidate will:

  • Contribute to R&D projects and lead laboratory tasks in binder jet additive manufacturing.
  • Receive direction from researchers and other technicians to complete needed tasks
  • Perform laboratory tasks such as material preparation, sample preparation, characterization, and maintaining a clean lab space.
  • Order materials, maintain inventory, perform routine material handling.


Qualifications Required:

  • Associates degree in any technical field or equivalent military experience.
  • Technical experience in following directions with a focus on hands-on implementation.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills to support researchers are required.
  • The demonstrated ability to manage task schedules, communicate experiment results, and adjust according and communicate experimental plan according to observation.
  • This position requires access to technology that is subject to export control requirements. Successful candidates must be qualified for such access without an export control license.
