Purpose:
The Vehicle Power Electronics Research Group in Buildings and Transportation Science Division at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) is seeking applicants for a Technical Professional Staff Position to support the power electronics and electric machinery research at the National Transportation Research Center located at the ORNL Hardin Valley Campus. The successful candidate is expected to support the design, development, fabrication, and assembly of experimental test setups involving power electronic converters including dc/dc converters, inverters, and rectifiers, electromagnetic field transmitters and receivers along with their mechanical support structures and liquid cooling systems, and electric motors. This person will closely work with other technical professionals and researchers at the group.
Major Duties / Responsibilities:
- Perform assembly and wiring of power converters for experimental test setups.
- Perform winding, assembly, and complete build up of electric motors and associated subsystems and mechanical housings.
- Design and build mechanical support structures for stationary or on-vehicle assemblies and subassemblies.
- Perform winding of motors, coils, inductors, and transformers.
- Build pipe fittings, hoses, manifolds, collectors, etc. between liquid cooling systems and cold plate heatsinks.
- Build experimental test setup, dynamometer test system connections, etc.
- Size, design, and build enclosures for power converters and electromagnetics systems and subsystems.

Basic Qualifications:
- AS degree in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering Technology with at least five years experience.
- Experience with mechanical systems, components, apparatus, fasteners, etc.
- Experience with liquid cooling systems including chillers, recirculators, fans, pumps, heat exhangers, fluids, manifolds, etc.
- Familiarity with electrical wiring, including signal level and power level with basic understanding of electrical schematics and diagrams.
- Have excellent written and oral communication skills to present the progress, seek feedback, and improve processes with researchers and external sponsors.
- Prior work experience with the industry will be valued for this position.
- A strong commitment to safety and scientific integrity is an important requirement.

Some travel may be required for this position to sponsor and partner facilities. No security clearance is required.
