Purpose

The Manufacturing Demonstration Facility (MDF) at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) seeks to hire a Manager of Industrial Collaborations with a strong manufacturing background and expertise in advanced manufacturing to help in the development, coordination, and delivery of research collaborations with industry.

 

Job Duties and Responsibilities:

 

The Manager of Industrial Collaborations is responsible for evaluating and aligning potential industry partners with core research activities in the MDF and developing technical collaborations that are focused on industry partner problems while being directly aligned with Department of Energy initiatives. In developing these partnerships, the Manager of Industrial collaborations will have the unique opportunity to address progress in fundamental manufacturing research in the areas of additive manufacturing, machining, data analytics, composites, hybrid materials, simulation tools, and digital manufacturing as it relates to U.S. industry. Roles of the Manager will include meeting and developing collaborative research activities with the potential industrial partners; working with the technical team to define work scopes; leading research projects to make sure that we meet timelines, milestones, and deliverables; and providing analysis and review of completed projects.

 
Research topics will leverage a wide variety of additive manufacturing capabilities, along with core competencies across the laboratory including high performance computation, materials science research, and advanced characterization. The position will work with the Facility Director, Advanced Manufacturing Program Manager, and project investigators to support Department of Energy, Advanced Manufacturing Office initiatives in a variety of capacities, including:  
 

Qualifications

You will be expected to collaborate and communicate well with material scientists, mechanical engineers, computer scientists, manufacturing experts, device manufacturers, machining experts, data scientists, and upper management, both internal to the laboratory and industrial partners, to translate business opportunities into technical challenges and research opportunities. Therefore, communication skills, both verbal and written, are important.
  • A minimum of five years of experience in working with manufacturing relevant companies
  • A Master’s Degree or greater in a technical and/or business field

 

Desirable Qualifications:

  • A Doctorate Degree in a manufacturing relevant technical field is preferred (mechanical engineering, materials science, computer science, chemistry, industrial engineering, etc.)
  • Experience in additive manufacturing, 3d printing, composites, and other advanced manufacturing.
